After removing the shutter, some button stems may remain partially exposed in the siding or may have broken off. For exposed stems, grip them lightly with wire cutters. Rock the wire cutters back and forth to leverage the stem out of the hole. If a stem breaks off flush or you are unable to pull it out, clip the exposed plastic as flush as possible with the wire cutters. Then, take a flathead screwdriver, place its tip on the clipped stem, and tap it with a hammer until it falls into the wall cavity behind the siding. This clears the hole for new fasteners.
