Power Company Comes WHAT A MESS!

What happens here

The power company will install the switchgear on the main utility pole. This includes fuses that can be pulled out or pushed in to control the power flow. The transformer will then be mounted on the installed pad, converting the high-voltage primary line to the appropriate voltage for the shop. Finally, a meter base and electrical panel will be installed on the exterior wall of the shop building to measure and distribute power internally. These steps are typically performed by the utility company and licensed electricians.

Goal: Connect the underground line to the main power grid and install the shop's electrical service.

Tools and materials

  • Electrical Conduit — Protecting the power lines where they run up the utility pole and into the meter base
  • Electrical Panel — Distributing power within the shop building
  • Meter Base — Housing the electricity meter on the side of the shop
  • Pad-Mount Transformer — Converting high-voltage power to a usable voltage for the shop
  • Switchgear — Controlling power flow and acting as safety fuses on the utility pole
