What happens here

Once the trench is excavated and leveled, lay down a layer of geotextile fabric. This fabric helps prevent the base gravel from mixing with the subsoil and improves drainage. Next, carefully spread a layer of crushed gravel (also known as base course or road base) into the trench. The gravel should be evenly distributed to the specified depth. Use a plate compactor to thoroughly compact the gravel layer, creating a solid and stable foundation for the blocks. Ensure the compacted base is level.

Goal: Create a stable, permeable, and level gravel foundation for the retaining wall.

Tools and materials

  • Level — Checking the level of the compacted base
  • Plate Compactor — Compacting the gravel base
  • Shovel — Spreading the gravel evenly
  • Crushed Gravel — Creating a stable, well-draining foundation for the blocks
  • Geotextile Fabric — Preventing base material from mixing with native soil and aiding drainage
