(17,658 characters)when remodeling your bathroom bathroom vanities can get expensive now when you look online or maybe in stores it's deceiving cuz it looks cheaper some could be between 44 and $500 when you examine closer the materials can be very cheap some can range from PVC plastic to even half2 in particle board so I decided to look up vanities that are actually solid wood as you can see right here they can range between $7 and $900 well today we're on mission to see how much money we could actually save by building it ourselves [Music] I'm convinced that all the materials here that are $260 worth of materials minus the paint of course is going to be enough for us to build this $993 vanity so to start off on the right foot we're going to use 3/4 in Maple ply one sheet is like 80 bucks so that's already a lot of our budget I made a sketch of the vanity at least rough Dimensions that I want to go with this is not going to be the absolute layup because of the one that we're going to go with has far more storage options and basically more ideal for what we're looking for now the only thing I don't like about this vanity is I don't like how the legs are way too simplistic so we're going to give it a little bit of ump let me slice these all up to make our 36in wide vanity and then uh we'll see if we can knock this thing out of car let's get into it we are 3/4 of the way through on our material so we have our bottom our sides these are stretchers pocket hole the stretchers to keep everything intact while not using too much material pocket hole the bottom so they can hold you know the bottom oh this is the wrong one and the reason it's the wrong one is cuz I pre-planned ahead and put one of the stretchers to pocket holes for the face frame almost caught myself there so we need the sucker to be 36 in beautiful it's actually 35 and 7/8 the reason why is uh the vanity for that space should only be 36 in wide so we're we're so far we're on point nothing bad Hasen happened yet yet knock on that wood stick around okay everything looks good I need two dividers going vertically because based off those plans there's uh drawers on the sides and a drawer down below that'll give me some meat on the bones when attaching those drawer slides happy to report I found a way to screw up uh man I spoke told you I uh wasn't as efficient with uh planning out or mapping out my cuts I have a small scrap pile of wood left but I want to avoid getting another sheet of plywood which is like I said 80 bucks uh 88 I think so these side pieces they're not deep enough so um typically I wouldn't be too concerned but I don't want that empty space when you open underneath the sink so what I'm going to do is the difference that I need I'm going to use my scrap piece glue it and pocket hole it these pocket holes will be on the inside of the drawers so nobody will know except you um sometimes these things just happen folks and uh you got to be efficient resourceful and come up with a plan B and just don't do it again next time [Music] we have our vanity and just like the original inspiration all of these compartments were equal um and I just took the width divided by four and so by equal I mean this drawer face is exactly half of this door half of this door and half of that drawer well full drawer now that that's in order um oh they wanted another drawer down below crap I got to throw another down below so I could squeeze another [Music] drawer in order to put the ribbon on this thing we got to put some stretchers out back uh that's the part that's going to attach to the studs of the wall so your cabinet's not going to go anywhere I'm going to throw one here here and here cuz I don't know where my studs are going to be they're 16 on Center but essentially it's going to be one here and one there I could possibly put one here and get in the corner that sucker and go nowhere son all right so I mentioned that I did not like the legs on that vanity way too simplistic I don't like how the legs are way too simplistic I wanted to have a little bit more character to it a little bit more texture so uh they sell these kits these legs that just screw on I'm going to throw one there there there and there and I'm going to be very happy to know that even when we put Granite quartz whatever countertop on there it's going to be nice and strong because I have all these reinforcing pieces this thing is already overbuilt better than some other stuff that they sell out there [Music] how does it look cute you like it mhm aren't these way better legs mhm yeah that's cool got some cool detail I like it I like the detail on them it adds a lot of character yeah it looked way too simplistic when the legs were just going straight down but I am excited I've never done a vanity that has so many drawers all the way around it so this is going to be all drawers or everything is going to be drawers uh drawers and then two doet okay and this is going to be open no that's going to be a drawer oh okay yeah I like it pretty slick right so moving on to the faces of this thing um I was today's years old am I saying that right today years old I was today year I have still saying right I was today year old years old years old I was today years old when I discovered that I don't need to be using one by two in poplular or pine if I'm painting it anyways in fact this is Pine that's already painted well primed uh and for some weird reason it's like two bucks cheaper than the raw material so I figured out a little place to save some money so basically between these three sticks where uh we got six bucks of lunch money to spend why don't you give me your lunch money but I'm going to flip this thing over uh measure my Styles and rails the way I usually like to do them is basically exactly how this joint is the style is going to go all the way up and this uh rail is going to butt up to them uh Lay It All Out make sure they're nice and square because that's going to determine how our drawer faces are going to be handling the situation so when it comes to doing face frames I think I'm a little dumb when I do them what are you stupid good grief um this is just a method that works with me I have to visually see it so I don't screw it up so what I do is I take a what is this a pin nailer I dig a pin nailer which is a really fine grade uh metal uh very thin and what I do is I lay all my pieces out exactly how I want them I label them and then take them off put pocket holes and put them together so it's dumb it's easy for me uh I don't know what other people do but I just simplify it ah ah wait we're good wait the Dismount is the most important part and there we [Music] go Moment of Truth please please don't SC us there there I think all in all I think we freaking nail this thing this is so sick of course we had a screw that uh blew out of course it couldn't all just go too perfect um I have a couple options I either take the screw off in the bottom side and then try to redrill it and then sand this down and Patch it up or let a dry sand it and then try to patch it up I let me do a quick fix then we'll attach it [Music] so building cabinet carcasses are fun building drawers is not fun and that's what we got to do now I got four here four here one there so we're at what nine and then two doors let's get started [Music] I am going to regret doing so many drawers after this is all done pretty straightforward stuff just a a lot of monotonous work pocket holes front and back uh dat cut down the middle quinch panel in there should go pretty smooth just pretty annoying but I don't want to bore you you can watch me do this and in the meantime let's award from our sponsor without whom we could not put out these videos ooh guys I'm hungry and this is a perfect time talk about the sponsors of today's video good chop do you know what's annoying trying to find good quality All-American fresh meat is delicious here's what you're going to do head two goodshop.com youout or just click the link description below use my promo code Mr build at130 to get $130 off across your first four boxes that's goodshop.com youout promo code Mr build it 130 okay maybe just one more piece for the road we made it we made it we got four drawers right there four more over there one more down the middle getting ready to install them found a few ways to spend save some money I also spent 30 today for the drawer materials and the slides found a way to save a little bit of money on the slides ball bearing which is what I originally wanted to go with were 18 bucks a piece for the size and I vowed to never use Euro style ever again but I found these interesting ones at Home Depot where they have a dampener on them so what that dampener does is it catches your drawer so it should theoretically sit perfectly in place and not be out of alignment like I've done before and I've also found a place to save money instead of buying the extension for the slides to go from the face frame to the back of the cabinet I decided to use some scrap 1 by two material put them on the sides and it's working perfectly fingers crossed I made all my measurements correctly but I have a track record of uh not doing so well with that so we'll see we'll see how today [Music] goes so go pull out that actually works but they definitely need to get pushed a little bit further in so we could have a better seat but that is way better than regular Euro slides not bad at all let the record show I still prefer ball bearing [Music] [Applause] slides what the freak why did I build such narrow drawers stupid a few moments later a few moments later uh everything came on fine it came fine I I feel like these drawer slides are redeeming themselves a little bit with that dampener here's my issue with it is I did my best to align them I truly did they're equally gapped I even put a little spacer for the drawer face how it be but they have a little bit of wiggle room up and down they're kind of a little spongy some not all this one's pretty solid which means that when we do our drawer faces and we want them recessed as opposed to sitting on top of the frame there's room for air but we'll cross that bridge when we get there in a minute here but however I came up with a really cool idea so what I was thinking is you know when we have these classic under the sink doors it's kind of awkward space cuz you have the plumbing the PE trap from the sink and all that stuff going and so what I thought it would be if I put some shelf pinning holes on the sides and take and put a shelf in there and to make it work cut out this little section down the middle round it over of course and that will fit perfectly between the P trap and be able to have a shelf on the side like this to put all your little Necessities in the sides little ideas come at the most important times all right I still have to get my shelf pins from the Home Depot but in the meantime here's a little sneak peek of how it would look so we can go as low as here to as high as there I think that looks pretty slick and I think it's going to get so much more storage now let's figure out this whole drawers and door Fiasco spending money dropped another 40 bucks uh for our drawers and doors drawer face is going to be simple nice and clean finish single piece goes in there round over there just easy peasy uh the doors itself are going to be Shaker style so we're going to have styles and rail on it fortunately they're not big there's not a lot of them each door is going to be like 7 and 1/2 in wide for a total of 15 uh for that I'm doing a 1x3 primed uh Pine as well and I got uh The Swinging hardware for it but also for the floating panel I wanted to save a little bit of money but also get a Flawless paint finish so I didn't want any knots or imperfections with natural wood so I got a 1x 12 MDF for the panel and the reason why is the panel is not going to get any kind of abuse it's always the Styles and rails that get slammed all the time that should be the plan for now let me start chopping it up throw it on the router catch my breath and let's have a good time let's get [Music] in this ain't got to cut it so I'm doing the panels right now and like I said they're going to be very narrow so I'm using my bit to create those little bevels inside the Shaker and that's just that's just comical there's not enough meat on the bones there so what I'm going to do instead is I'm going to throw it in my thickness planer shave it all the way down to the flat part here uh and that should work great I would use at this point just a quarter inch panel but this is just a hair over4 inch it's it says exactly qu inch but it's probably like qu inch and a 30 seconds I just don't want it to Rattle I really don't so this is just proof what I'm talking about I have a little quar p inch panel here uh put it in there it's like I said it's like a 302 maybe even a 16th off probably that's a 16th off and there's a trick I saw that you can put these little squishy balls in there on the sides and it keeps it from rattling but my fear is that if that Gap is there and I paint it it's going to delaminate the paint from that panel you know what I mean I'd rather to be like nice snug let me just throw this thing and I'll show you see this is what I'm talking about a solid panel door no rattling no shaking no flimsy material nice and solid all the way through I'm going to start gluing this up only two doors so hopefully in an hour I could gently start riding over the edges um sanding everywhere else that I need rounding over my drawer faces and just dapping up a little bit of primer where we need fortunately we have to don't really have to buy much primer just maybe like one rattle can and then tomorrow we're going to shoot some spray paint not spray paint we're going to spray the paint and uh I'll be honest with you I'm pretty excited about the color and I hope you are as well here he here he gather around the announcement of the color Vintage Vogue what who would have expected that not you me sure uh it's a beautiful color I'll prove it to you the idea is going to be everything's going to be Vintage Vogue we're going to have like a rose red that the color for Hardware antique gold and the legs are going to get stay in natural wood so I think all three combinations with wi qu countertop is going to be phenomenal let's [Music] spray now I wanted to address something for this challenge bill just to make sure everything's nice and fair number one the mission was not to create the cheapest version of this expensive vanity we just wanted to meet somewhere in the middle to see if there's a few ways that we could save money without blowing 1,200 bucks on a brand new purchase maybe we could save some money and buy some tools and that we did now the grand total budget breakdown for this build was $496 that is superiorly less than the advertised $1,250 before the sale so honestly I really think that we're actually pretty neck to neck to what it cost to build it versus what it cost actually buying something if you're looking to get the countertop for it by the way marble is really nice all right so Ben and I just hauled this vanity up through all the snow uh excuse the voice I've been dealing with something recently and hopefully it's going to get over here pretty soonly but I got the vanity inside and folks I am excited to show you what we came up with Feast your eyes on this all right guys I am extremely excited how this thing turned out I think the color both the brass and the legs they all match so perfectly together not to mention the white quartz countertop with the vessel sink on top that thing is going to be so clutch and I'm excited because this new home is going to be in the bathroom upstairs and I'm convinced this is going to be an awesome statement piece for that weird weird bathroom now I don't want to ruin any surprises but the next video is going to include that bathroom the exact bathroom where that vanity is going this is what I'm secretly working out right now and it's the biggest challenge of my life because that entire wall it's slanted well kind of like this roof right there that means shower glass mirror everything does not work like it traditionally does so make sure you tune in for that video and um let's see what kind of solutions we can come up with and in the meantime here's a video thing you might enjoy see you bye
