I broke the truck!

hey there folks this is josh stoney ridge farmer welcome back to another mechanic mondays here on the stoney ridge farm we're starting a new segment it's mechanic mondays and for some reason every tailgate on the farm is messed up so this is red yoda and red yoda has let me down i slammed my tailgate a little bit too hard and after i did that one side wasn't working and now both sides aren't working and the handle seems really really floppy so today's video is going to be a short mechanic monday we're going to be replacing this is a dorman brand or doorman brand uh tailgate latch right here so we're going to take this toyota i'll show you how we get the tailgate open now that it's broken and we replace the tailgate latch now if you need to replace the tailgate latch on your tailgate i'm gonna post a link to the this latch in the video description down below you can use that link to get to amazon to find the appropriate tailgate latch for your tailgate so let's without further ado get busy and knock this job out mechanic mondays on the stoney ridge [Music] so first things first the back of the truck is loaded down with tools i've got tons of projects going on on the farm and we need to use the tailgate as a workbench to work off of well we can't do that with the tailgate jammed up like this so i've got to take a flat tip screwdriver long flat tip and i've got to go back in here and there are telltale signs that this has happened before i'll show you you can see this is already dented up a little bit and what i got to do is get back in here with the screwdriver wiggle my way back here to the latch and pop it real quick okay so this side is good you can see it's separated right there just a little bit then we'll go on down to the other side and do the same thing basically stick our screwdriver back in here i can see the latch portion right in here we'll stick it back in and we're jimmying jimmying the latch pretty much is what you'd call this not to offend anyone named jimmy but that's it okay tailgate down now what we've got to do is remove all of these screws right here and there's an access panel up underneath so let's get busy we'll pop all these screws out by the way this video is brought to you in part by northern tool that's where all these dewalt tools came from northern tool and equipment awesome this is going to be fun really easy to lose these little bitty screws like this so we're going to be using a magnetic tray right here and it won't do us any good because these are aluminum but we'll use this tray anyway so we've got one two three four five six seven eight of these we'll slip this guy off this is your bed liner over here are all the screws that need to be removed so there are four more right here that takes this plate off every tailgate is going to be just a little bit different but i think you get the gist of this man this thing's really really nice only thing it's missing is a good cup holder pop that over slide them out of the way and here is our problem check it out evidently when i shut the tailgate this thing just came plopping out so it's not in good shape these two tabs are something that normally breaks we want to make sure that we've got good functionality uh on both ends right here so this tab right here is spring loaded just like so and it needs to work appropriately so i'm going to pull this to give it a test yep no problem that side works we'll go on over here make sure this side works yep works good a lot of times these plastic tabs are the problem that's what's gone bad but in this case it's not the plastic tabs it's actually the entire apparatus here so the way we remove these i just did one without telling you so you just press with your thumb right here you can use a screwdriver or wrench if you want to press just like that that releases that tab and then out comes the bad part so that's part of the bad part and i guess it just slipped out right there next thing we're going to do is pull these two screws out right here very simple this is a 93 toyota pickup and we definitely want to hang on to that it's got a bunch of washers and stuff on it okay we'll reach down underneath and i'll take the last little bit out by hand okay and that's it voila out comes our tailgate handle that's pretty simple huh grab our new doorman open her up try not to destroy the packaging in case i got to return it there we go this guy is just going to go back up underneath just the same as the last one we're going to drop this tab down into here and actually drop it in lock it into place here in a second after we go ahead and start our screws guys let me know if you like mechanic mondays i think it's going to be a good segment on the channel we'll do something mechanical just about every monday here [Music] so that goes down in that hole just drop it in and then we'll take this tab bend it over just like that so we'll go ahead this might be a little hard to get to yeah it's right there so we'll slide it in okay both of them are secure in place we'll go ahead get the tripod out of the way give it a try make sure it works okay all the linkage is in place here very good okay before we put it all back together let's go ahead and set this thing up to the side we'll test the tailgate before we do it okay very good bam awesome five minute fix we'll go ahead and
