the word for today is woods baby this video is brought to you in part by woods equipment the best hey there folks this is josh stoney ridge farmer welcome back to another awesome day off the stoney ridge farm but with my piece of equipment so we're over at a friend's farm about five miles away hence the reason there's a green tractor instead of our favorite red tym tractor and we're gonna be running the seed drill today so this is the woods precision super cedar we'll walk around the seed drill we'll show it to you and we've got two young farm hands i want to introduce you guys to so introduce yourselves guys my name's hayden i'm nate these guys are gonna be running the sea drill loading it up and doing all the work today and i get to film which is awesome that's a good part of loaning out a piece of equipment like this so before we even get started guys a big shout out to mr butler's class everybody in the class let's uh wake the school up here come on guys yeah uh give it to me you mean come on come on you gotta get better than that so we got to get these guys to some nascar races get their woo on today we're going to be running a sea drill we've got a spot over here we'll show you guys we're going to toss the drone up in the air we'll walk you all around this woods precision super cedar we're going to be using a vintage deer tractor right here they don't make them like this anymore this is a john deere 2955 it's a nice very nice fun old-school tractor 1992 been very well kept however it has a hydraulic leak old tractors old tractors leak sometime so got to get that fixed and john deere isn't known for leaking is it i don't think so right not like the tym tym so let's get busy we'll walk you guys around this piece of equipment and we'll start drilling down grass seed these guys are going to load up the seat [Music] stoney farms [Music] as i said this is the woods precision super cedar this is an awesome piece of equipment for your farm we'll be over seeding part of our farm probably later in the year but i've loaned this out to my buddy who's got a piece of bare land up here i'll walk up here and i'll show you we're going to be drilling a seed rate of about 150 to 220 pounds to the acre of contractor mix okay so that is going to be about 80 percent fescue and about 20 percent annual rye grass now i advise these folks and this is the land we're gonna be drilling it down on right here i advise them to get the spring mix not the fall mix now typically you'll put down the uh millet mix so to be 20 percent millet 80 fescue but instead they accidentally got the wrong thing so we're gonna do the wrong thing today and we'll see how it does we'll uh give you guys a full report on that in the future let's take you around the sea drill and show you so this is the bare spot that we're gonna be seeding it's about yeah two acres two and a half acres something like that probably gonna take every bit of 45 minutes back to front this is the woods precision super cedar oregon illinois made in the usa woods just means quality this is a pss-72 and it's a little different than any seed drill you've probably ever seen before you've got three hoppers right here this is warm season grasses and native grasses this is for like fescue grasses and cool season grasses and this is for clover c we'll open this guy up right here big lesson learned guys never ever ever got a kick stand right there by the way never leave grass seed in your hopper and at the end of using any cedar always go in with a little shop vac and vacuum all this stuff out because it will get moisture in there it will sprout and it will rust out your equipment so know that for sure it's a little kickstand right here each one of these has a nice little door this one's a little different if you don't secure this and this thing's loaded with seed it will flop and bounce and your seed will come out okay so you want to make sure it's closed this is our cool seasons and cereal grains we'll crank this guy up we also have a kickstand here we'll raise that guy down with our kickstand just like so we've got an awesome chart right here and this is what we've got it set at i think we're set at three quarters and we're looking at tall fescue so we're going to be making an adjustment that would be 98 pounds to the acre we want to move it on out to about 150 pounds so that's one and one eight here's how to adjust okay we're coming down here there's a little measuring tool right there loosen this handle oh right there let me go on out to the one and one-eighth mark just like that snugger back down and then our fescue grass seed will fall down through each one of these little shoots right here and it goes down and gets pulverized into the ground with this spiked roller right here after the spiked roller well we'll show you the front side in just a second this is where our clover seed would go if we had clover seed in there and that's our adjuster for our clover and that's set right there for about 20 i think it's three pounds of the acre not 23. three pounds to the acre i believe and again there's a chart so let this guy down you can see this has little rods in it and that helps to keep it from clogging up right there those spin this is a ground driven implement okay so in other words it's driven by the ground and all the gears are spun by the ground and they're driven by the roller right here so as these rollers in the front go through they cut the land up you can see they're brought out at a broad direction right there so they rip the land up just a little bit then they drop the seed pulverize it in and then it comes back and cultipacks it this is an all-in-one awesome machine for overseeding pastures and for doing food plots so let's open up the rear hopper we're not going to be using the rear hopper or the very front hopper but we'll open it up and this is your native warm season grasses open this guy up look down in there native grasses have a larger seed okay so that's why the larger hopper and the gears are a little bit different in here pretty cool this one also has a kickstand it's fully adjustable by this arm right here and this goes in the float position so the way this thing works is it just cruises along with the contour of the land the undulations that's the word of the day undulation and again the seed we're going to be using is from green resources in colfax north carolina it's where i get all my grass seed those guys don't pay me to tell you but i tell you what they are the suppliers to the contractors that's where you want to go get your seed for your pasture for your lawn for anything you want to go where the pros go for sure so we have 79 tall fescue and 19 annual rye grass again this is not the recommended drought tolerant mix that i would use on my property i've learned lessons in the past and using this so if we have a wet spring and a fairly wet summer it will do absolutely awesome if not it won't so you want to seek out the contractor mix for summertime if you're going to do this in the spring so spring seeding you want to seek out the mix with the millet in it because millet will grow on a rock and it's very drought tolerant these cool season grasses like annual rye grass and tall fescue don't grow so well in drought conditions once they set down roots they can hold it but without setting down roots and that's what you want the first three or four months is setting down roots so let's get busy fire the tractor up load this critter up and get her done don't overfill it's too expensive [Music] if you feel it too full and you hit a bump it will bounce out so you can see this guys you waste a little bit of seed but we're learning here right we're all learning every day guys there aren't a whole lot of young people that are really into this farm think so if you find somebody who has the aptitude and is interested in farming like this definitely get them to help you for sure give them that opportunity for sure i didn't have that opportunity as a young man i just had to pick up hay bales all right folks i hope you're enjoying the video today please jump in pound that like button i'd love to have you back on the channel jump in subscribe this is awesome awesome farm content here building small family farms here in the foothills of the blue ridge mountains in north carolina so this tractor is about 110 horsepower i'd say you could probably use anywhere from a 55 horsepower up to the largest tractor you'd like to use to pull this precision superseder it does a fantastic job and the germination rate is so much better with the precision superseder versus broadcast seating [Music] now what you can't see is that the fella in the tractor is bouncing around quite a bit and you can probably see the machine is bouncing around a little bit remember the word of the day undulations so that machine will cruise around over top of any little gullies and washes and almost smooth them out following the undulations of the land or the contour of the land basically it has a setting on the top link where it floats across the land so we can go up and down free of the tractor it's a beautiful day here guys just absolutely gorgeous [Music] i want to let you guys know there are a lot of programs out there so check your local ag extension office and see if there are any programs that can help you out with your seed to reseed your land or to plant native species there's some awesome programs out there [Music] so while you're running this machine you want to go around do a couple laps and check it check your hopper make sure you're not running out and you'll kind of get an idea of how long you can run it before you have to put grass seed on it so we're checking it about every 15 to 20 minutes here he'll be wrapped up in this field pretty quickly he's got a couple other pastures on the farm that he's going to do after i'm gone but i thought i'd help him get a good start and teach him how to use the machine [Music] all right guys he's all done man that didn't take any time let's see if we can get him out of the tractor and get some feedback how that thing performed well a job well done first of all thank you did you like how that thing performed yeah i think it did very well yeah planted the field good i think i think it did a good job right on now you got a youtube channel i can't remember did i give you a shout out already on your youtube channel hayden outdoors with hayden you did a while ago yeah okay guys check out outdoors with hayden i'll post a link at the end of this video you haven't made a video in a couple of years have you it's been a while it's all about hunting and fishing this guy's an outdoorsman for sure yep awesome cool man well thanks thank you good job it looks great thank you woods all right whoa come on there it is see y'all next time enjoyed it look how nice this does it just does an awesome job finishing everything off you can see all the little ripples in the land putting down plenty of seed just did a great job it's awesome to see a young person like that super excited about agriculture thanks guys we'll see
