worn out and or broken just like this critter let's show you real quick that guy broken uh tailgate hanger so come along today we're gonna show you guys a quick process quick and simple and easy if you're not subscribed to the channel jump in subscribe pound that like button i'd love to have you back here on the stoney ridge [Music] all right folks welcome to the stoney ridge farm channel we got a problem and this problem is the tailgate hanger on this 99 dodge ram 2500 pickup this is my farm truck this is my beater truck and it is rusty it's really really rusty and consequently these things are really really rusty and they don't last so what i did was i ordered two new ones i'll post a link down the video description these are the nice ones okay so these are the ones that have the shrink wrap tape on it they're black i don't know if they're anodized or painted but they're black they're nice uh nice rubber coating the the i guess how to say this the higher quality tailgate hangers or what these guys are again i'll post a link down there in case you need to do this on your own truck i will say this do it before it breaks so if you've got one that's just frayed a little bit go on and replace it it doesn't take very long we'll show you guys just a quick simple process here after that process we're going to have a video in the future here fixing red yoda so red yoda's tailgate won't even go down i slammed it too hard and broke the little plastic pieces in it so let's get busy without further ado so in case you didn't know all tailgates pretty much are supported by this little cable right here okay and this cable is good on one side but it's got a little crack right there once this little cable housing cracks open you're pretty much your days are limited now this truck is 23 years old so it's an expected wear item very very simple we're gonna leave this one attached because it's good and we're gonna replace the other one first it's very simple these things just pop right off and then there's a bolt right here you have to replace now these are left and right i do believe so i've got to figure that out and i just want to make sure that i match the one that i'm replacing exactly with the one that i am pulling off so in other words this should be the correct one for the other side what you have to do is look at this little tab there's a push tab and make sure it's going to fit correctly and match up so this one goes with this side and this one goes with the other side so first thing we're going to do is we're going to start by lifting this tab right here and all you have to do is lift that tab to slip that guy off it slips on just like so this is the old one that's broken and slips off just by taking your finger or a screwdriver back here lift that up and just get that off okay so we'll get rid of that one then right here we have a torx and we have to get a torx and a wrench and get that guy off this is a five minute job all right now trusty dewalt tool set from northern tool big shout out to the folks at northern tool for helping support the channel here this is not a sponsored video uh but northern tool is a huge help so i believe we've got a number 45 torx i'm just going to double check that that's what it is number 45 torx right here that's what we're going to use and just that simple we'll pop this guy loose so here is the bad end right here you can see we've got to remove this torx bolt this again is a t45 torx you're gonna hear a little background noise i'm warming a tractor up i'm getting ready to get on the tractor and do a little bit of work today we'll take this guy loose you can't over tighten this unless you break it off so you gotta just kind of use common sense it still has some residual blue loctite on there from the factory back 20 something years ago which is uh definitely a testimony to how this truck was built these trucks last forever man i'm a huge fan of these second generation dodge pickups the body will rust off of the uh chassis but boy these trucks just don't quit this is the 5.9 liter gas so we're in good shape right here next thing we're going to do is we're going to step out of the way we're going to raise the tailgate up just like so and attach our tailgate handle look at that already in place it's just that easy let's go over to the other side we'll show you one more time again t45 torx this is just on the dodge pickup this this applies pretty much to every pickup truck okay pop that guy out we'll let this one hang just for a second and go ahead and mount this one in the appropriate manner it ain't rocket science if it was it'd be called rocket science we're good to go there we're going to reach right here we're going to take our oven off lift that guy up get him out of the way this old one is still good but not too often good if you notice i've got another second gen dodge over there so we may hang on to this i'll just hang it in the shop in case i break one and need it we're gonna lift this guy up do the same thing just goes right over this tab right here just as simple press lock into place boom now the tailgate works if you keep doing that you'll have to replace the new ones too awesome guys all right there's your stoney ridge quick tip of the day that's how to replace the hangers on your tailgate your tailgate cable hangers just that simple if you've got an old pickup truck like mine and you're trying to make it last a long time that's the way to do it guys thanks a lot for joining me here on the stoney ridge farm today please
