(12,022 characters)hey folks that fix it guy here today we're going to be installing an insinkerator garbage disposal the model it's a badger 15 ss this is stainless steel components inside it's a three-quarter horse and it's one of my favorite middle-of-the-road picks so come along let's get it hooked up all right the material that we'll be using today to install the garbage disposal which is this is the garbage disposal is going to be the badger 15 ss we're going to need a cord because remember the electrical cord does not come with the badger unless it says it on the box it does not come with the model you can buy models with the cord but most do not come with them and then this is the mounting flange that comes with the disposal this is what we'll be using we'll be using some plumber's putty to install that this has some phillips screws on the bottom of it so we'll be using this six and one screwdriver to put that together and then we'll be using a pair of channel locks i like to use the bigger 440s to actually clip this in place when it's done the step that we use these channel locks is a step that a lot of people don't do and i've gone to people's houses where their disposal have fell off because this was not done all right so let's get to work okay so the disposal we're gonna be replacing today is this badger five right here it's a half horsepower we're going to try to see how old this thing is but you can see by these marks right here this is actually pitting in the body itself and it's just going to eventually pit away to where it starts leaking and you can see that it's already cracking apart right there it's actually not even secured on could have just fell off at any time really we're going to go ahead and we're going to swap this out first thing we're going to do is we're going to unplug this you always want to make sure it's unplugged we're going to go ahead and we're going to take a flathead screwdriver we're going to undo these two bolts right here these two screws there's one on each side so that'll take that apart oh man we're going to take our six in one we're gonna undo this worm clamp right here for the dishwasher just hang that back there doesn't mess with us we're going to take either a screwdriver or we're going to take the disposal wrench in this case we have the disposal wrench so we're just going to use it and we're going to take that and we're just going to put it in this keyhole right here where it goes one hand underneath and we're just going to turn and it's going to drop right out trying to be as clean as possible i just like to take the garbage disposal then and put it right back in the old box right this new one actually came with a bag in it set it right down in there it's already boxed up and packaged up ready to go outside okay and so now i'm laying on my back and you've got a good shot at this and you see one two and three screws just gonna wanna loosen those up you wanna get you wanna be able to have a little gap in there you want some kind of movement now that you have that movement you're gonna wanna switch the head on your screwdriver to the flathead and you see this little ring right here right down in the inside of this there's a ring right there and you see there's a little gap right there in it just want to take this go right to the side of that gap and just pop that ring right out and once you got a hold of that [Music] the other tip is don't be right underneath it like i'm a little ways away from it so that way if it falls it's not going to bonk in your head hit you in the face and you're not going to get a bunch of stuff in your eyes but now i've got two sides of this in my hand see so i'll set two of these down so the screwdriver down and i'll be able to just grab this other piece and i'll take this off and now the top of this will just pop right out the top so now we're able to just remove that and we'll just put that right in the box as well tell you it works out and just go around the top and around the bottom you want to clean that bottom edge just as good as you clean the top so i like to grab some plumber's putty make it into a ball and make it about the size of it just fits right in the middle of your palms about the size of one of those big bouncy balls just get that set aside and you just set it right back down in there for a minute and then we'll pop this right here out flip our screwdriver head and we just find that lip again like i said this is a much cleaner version for this lip and you just find that edge and just pop it eye off just pop it up and then that just that retainer clip just comes right off of there and so now we leave this whole assembly this is the way the actual assembly is going to go so you just leave it like this and just kind of make sure that all these are up and they're all the same height and they are and we just let this set exactly this way because that's the way it's going back in the retainer clip usually sets like this when it's not on something or when it's not on the mounting flange but for installation purposes you just want to pull it apart a little bit and make it like that it's going to make it so much easier to install that way whenever we go to put it on so now we'll take that ball and we'll just roll it out a little bit i kind of wish logan was here he could help me with this part that one ball is enough to go the whole way around here if it turns out to be a little bit more than so be it but not bad so then we just get this all worked in and now there we have it so then we're just going to set this in the top of the sink this has lettering on it it has words you just want to make sure that goes in the front in the center just kind of get that pushed down nice and tight when you're doing the solo you're going to want to put something on top of it i usually just take this big thing of plumber's putty and set it right down on top now we're going to go ahead and we're going to hook the bottom up we've got this on we've left this sandwich the way that it is same way we took it out we're putting it back in we just set this up in place we've got the ring here it's still in the place that we left it with the ends touching and so what i like to do then is i just like to take this i like to hold my thumb on one side of where the ring is i like to use my other one my other fingers to hold it halfway in the middle and then just take your other ones and just kind of get it pushed around and then it just clips right in place just tighten all these up even so i just like to go three or four turns and then three or four turns okay all these are tight now we're going to go up top oh look at that we just popped that off this whole little thing just came out grab a screwdriver flat head and just just go around it get the excess off and make it look pretty so now that we've got that on we're going to turn our attention to installing the plug and also taking the knockout out of the disposal because we have a dishwasher we switch our six way back over to phillips head we'll just pop this screw off and we're gonna remove the cover plate we'll pull out the two wires take these first off they look pretty gnarly clockwise righty tighty we'll get them kind of looking back to good here get those hooked up we'll set the two wire nuts aside right here we'll take this adapter right here and we'll actually just take this nut right off of it we're gonna discard that and we're gonna take this just get it to where it's tight take channel locks just a little bit more a quarter turn that ain't coming out we'll take the end of the plug-in and we're just gonna feed that whole thing right down in oh hold on one of those fell down inside here we're gonna need that let's not set that on there again set this back over here we will take the end of the cord and we'll just curve it around and bring it right on out now this cord you can see that it actually has a kind of a cord protector piece or a piece of rubber right here kind of want to stop right stop right there take this and tighten it up and then the ground screw you're just gonna want to take that completely out careful not to drop it in there and just put it right on that eyelet right there and we're just going to screw that down now you just want to connect these that's the beauty of putting a plug on and you just take wire nut put them together even and then turn until they don't turn anymore clockwise then do the same with the other side those are on just stuff them down in there put that back in place so now the power cord is hooked up now we're going to focus on taking out this knockout plug right here flip this to flat head [Applause] just a flathead screwdriver and then i just use the other side of my channel locks and a few taps so now you can see that it's kind of popped out right there you're just going to stick your hand up on the other side of this and just kind of you see my fingers in there working it just kind of work it out okay so make sure that you get this out of there this piece of plastic will definitely stop up your garbage disposal so just pop the top off you know this that little boot comes right off this is the piece that comes out we'll just throw that away this piece right here it just doesn't cover it just kind of sits on there it's easy to take off and clean it goes back on fairly quick and really you can just pop it off and look around in there make sure you got all the pieces of it sometimes that piece doesn't come off singular sometimes it comes off in multiple pieces just be careful of that because you don't want that you don't want to start off with your garbage disposal being stopped up right away so we want to make sure that the tabs are on the bottoms of these before we put them in place so we just come up to that and then we're able to just take it and slide it a little bit and that's going to hold it on this is still going to be able to move once this whole thing is locked in place so the deal is a lot of people just go to right here and say oh it's tight it's good but that's not necessarily the case what we want to do then is we want to come up to right here and right here there really shouldn't be much of a gap right there take your channel locks and you just go right like this and just squeeze one side's all it needs you do that and you get no gap right here that's the way you want it that's never going to fall off you're still able to turn this and move it however you want it's not going to leak that is a good disposal install go ahead and we're going gonna just hook up the dishwasher drain line let's grab our six and one just put the worm clamp back on where it was okay so we've got that cut down and with this we just take it put the flange connector on for the garbage disposal put the nut put the washer and now we fit it in place to see if it works so with the with the garbage disposal this little ring right here just fits right in here and you just put that on there before you put the other thing in place so just set that right there and then we'll put it all together okay so nothing's really tight so we put that right there and that's a perfect fit flat head just right there until they're both tight and then you can put put that in place [Music] once you've got the screws tightened and you've got the dishwasher drain line hooked back up to the garbage disposal we can go ahead we can come around over here and we can plug it in and get ready for testing that'll wrap it up for our garbage disposal install thank you folks so much happily just try to help out where i can or if you know a better way of doing something that i did please by all means i'm open to criticism as well i like the critiquing i think it makes you a better person and a better plumber if you could click the like button subscribe to our channel we're really just trying to help people out and we're just you know hopefully we can keep doing this thank you so much and have a great night bye
