What happens here
This DIY project provides detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to replace a leaky single-handle pressure balancing cartridge in a Kohler tub shower. The process covers shutting off the water supply, disassembling the existing faucet trim, removing the old cartridge, preparing and installing a new generic cartridge, reassembling the trim, testing for leaks, and optionally adjusting the anti-scald feature.

(5,362 characters)this is dripping at just over 9 and 3/4 of a shower per month hey folks that Fixit guy here and today we're going to be replacing a single handle pressure balancing cartridge in my color tub shower so come along let's get to fix it go outside real quick and shut the water off I like to come out to my meter box with a meter key you see that little slot right there righty tidy to shut the water off so we've got this drip right here coming out of my tub spout it's about a tablespoon a minute it's about 3 and 3/4 cups an hour over 5 1/2 gallons a day the average shower is 17.2 gallons of water that means this is dripping at just over 9 and 3/4 of a shower per month so I bought a new shower valve this is actually a generic version of this off of Amazon why because it was a third of the price of an OE M do yourself a favor block off your drain we've already got the water shut off we will turn this on just get it drained there's no button for the handle this doesn't screw on what it does is this discussion actually spins Lefty Loosey spin that that just pops off all right see I I did have some uh some caulk on here I do like to caulk these I know some people are like no I don't do that but you know what I don't like getting Gunk and nastiness all around the inside two BR screws on the top and bottom of this all right gently pull those out do not want to lose those in the wall that would be fun okay all right this should pop out now make sure we don't get a ton of water everywhere and this just pops right out and got a couple O-rings on here this valve is not very old I'm actually really surprised all right let's look at the difference here this is the new one this is the old one same size just different manufacturers and we'll see like I said third of The Price Right comes with a 90day money back guarantee no questions asked mixer and pressure balancing unit kit installation little silicone grease for you just to put back on all these O-rings just a little dab on each one of these all right get it all hooked out this new valve came with sandpaper but I don't see any reason to use it if you had some kind of midal buildup you could go around this a couple times but I'm not going to this o-ring right here we're going to lube that up so we just put a little grease right around this right here because of this little knob right here and the way the handle spins that is going to be the top this one goes back in here like so all the way in we're popping this metal ring right here off we don't need that we're going to be putting our old one back on this one right here we've got the O-rings around the out side we've got them lubed up and now we can just pop that on and that is the way this is going to set right this is a universal valve that's got a bunch of different combinations to it get this pushed in here like so you want to make sure that this top notch right here is lined up the actual top hole is there and we're able to get this tightened on this one as well before we put any of the trim back we're going to make sure this works all right slowly slowly open this to where we can just hear it coming out all right we come back in to water moving that's a good sign let's grab our little piece that holds our handle on and set that down good well it works look back in here make sure there's no leak anywhere now we can just start reassembling that goes in the top hole get that one started in the bottom quick tighten of our brass screws we're going to get this ring right here right around it cleaned up you can see there a little a little funky it's just a little yellow this little piece right here that's going to allow the handle to go back and forth pop this bad boy on there get that tightened up get the plate and the handle on have to keep that straight while we're doing that thought was pretty painless so there's a little weep hole down in the very bottom of this that I always like to leave open just because I feel like you could see a drip coming out or something if there's a leak right there other people are going to tell you that hey it's uh because you're not supposed to caulk this but I'm caulking it all right get a contractor sponge a little damp make it look pretty oh my gosh get your wife's hair out of there all right get all that cleaned up so now we're just going to let this dry right here and this white line is going to turn clear go to rock and roll here's the adjustment for the anti-cold feature for this colar valve it is this red looking knob right here and it has this little allen wrench adjustment screw okay you back this out and then once you close this it will give you more hot water if you had a child or an elderly concern about them getting burned well then just tighten it up and it's not going to allow you to get as much hot water as you potentially could check this out it doesn't take very long and you can already see that the white is starting to turn clear in some areas all right folks this is the colar gp876851 this is the pressure balancing valve cartridge and the mixer cap okay this is going to work for the k-304 models and for the K 11748 models these are single-handle models I really hope the video helps you guys could please subscribe click the like button we'd love to have you keep coming back thank you very much and we'll see you again real soon
