Extracting the spring honey harvest....Fun and Educational! How small farms harvest honey!

What happens here

The first step involves setting up the honey extraction station. Begin by positioning the manual honey extractor on a stable surface, ensuring it is level and secure. Place a filter bucket, ideally with a 400 micron mesh filter, directly underneath the extractor's honey gate (spigot) to collect and filter the honey. Next, prepare the uncapping station by setting up a clear plastic tote to collect wax cappings and dripping honey. Fill a large pot or similar container with hot water and place it nearby, as this will be used to keep the heated uncapping knife warm. Lay out all the necessary uncapping tools, including a heated uncapping knife, a cold uncapping knife, and an uncapping fork/comb, making them easily accessible.

Goal: Prepare all equipment and tools for honey extraction.

Tools and materials

  • Clear Plastic Tote — Collecting wax cappings and honey drips during the uncapping process
  • Cold Uncapping Knife — Slicing off wax cappings; an alternative to heated knives
  • Filter Bucket — Collecting honey after extraction, with a built-in filter
  • Heated Uncapping Knife — Efficiently slicing off wax cappings from honeycombs
  • Large Pot — Holding hot water for the heated uncapping knife
  • Manual Honey Extractor — Spinning frames to extract honey
  • Mesh Filter — Filtering out wax cappings and debris from the extracted honey
  • Towels — Protecting the work area from honey drips and spills
  • Uncapping Fork/Comb — Pricking or scraping open capped honey cells, particularly in uneven areas
