EASY Skim Coat Application

all right let's get this project started now i've got my wall back here this is a heavy knock down texture but it does have some really sharp peaks right here so it would take too much to skin coat to get rid of those so i'm just going to sand that down with a festool planet sander using an 80 grit so i'm going to sand it really quick knock that stuff down and then i'm going to skim coat it with a bow arrow product it's a water resistant gypsum powder i'm just going to mix that up skim coat this wall and you can sand it in about two hours it dries really quick so get that wall skim coated then we're gonna prime it and we'll get working on our venetian plasters so now i've got to everything off the wall here i'm going to run some tape down here on my baseboards so when i do the sanding process if i accidentally hit the baseboards i don't want to nick or dig them the tape will add kind of as a buffer and so i'm just going to take this off real quick here and i'm using right now this is uh blue tape from frog tape so this will also be my tape that when i begin um doing the process the venetian plaster nothing will bleed underneath the tape now if you haven't seen the phonics this is a festool clinic's right here wall standard ceiling sander i'm going to hook it up kind of vacuum to hook it up too so i don't make a big mess also you can see where it's starting to knock down some of these really uh large peaks right here and knock them down really fast so really simple just keeping the sander moving really quick if you don't keep it moving it's going to heat up really fast and it's going to gum up your sandpaper so we just want to move quickly and now we're going to begin mixing up our coat right here and this is a dry powder this is um bow arrows this is their water water resistant gibson compound and i use this product for instead of using like a topping compound because this dries you can if you put a fan on it you can get it to dry in about an hour and a half to two hours and then you can sand it right away versus topping you're gonna skim coat the wall have to come back the next day this dries really fast and it stands really easy it's also water resistant it can be used inside or outside so it's very versatile so here's just going to dump in some of the powder i want to just mix it to get it to be a nice consistent smooth paste form i'll show you the consistency i'm looking for see what it's looking like now it's that's about that's getting pretty close to what i want to see it at right there and once i get it mixed up i'm going to let it rest for five minutes come back stir it one more time and it's gonna be ready to go how's the shrinkage on your product you're using um so that's another thing this this product doesn't shrink so it's a very good point to bring up so it dries um in two hours so it's about two hour dry time just depending on your heat and humidity also but around two hours and then it sands more like a topping compound and not like uh hot mud and stuff so it gives you the the benefit of drying fast but sanding easy all right so i got my mud all mixed up that i'm gonna be skim coating these walls with i'm going to run two rows of tape up at the top so my roller doesn't hit the ceiling and then along the edges and i'm going to put some paper down on the bottom of the baseboards in case anything um drops down it'll just drop on the paper and not on my drop cloth so this is going to be my end point of my wall put a row of tape on the end point here that's good too what no it's um it's not it's got too much dry stuff in it all right i got to my first coat of water resistant gypsum powder up from burrow up on the wall first skin coat uh it's a brand new product so um a little bit getting used to i should put it on a little bit heavier so i'll have to put another coat on after i sand right now because the texture is showing through and if we sanded it now and began the venetian plaster process you would actually begin to see the texture shadow through the plaster so i'm just going to sit lightly sand this i've got 180 grit sandpaper on here on my best tool planet sander and then we're going to mix some more up and re-skim it so here we go [Music] so the walls are all prepped and smooth now now this is a smooth wall finish and this is pretty ideal for bowero's metallic suede metallic grit and this is what you really have to have for a venetian plaster also anybody that just wants to get rid of a textured orange feel texture knockdown texture now you can have a smooth wall finish keep working with it some of the imperfections get down to a level five finish and you have a level 5 finish but this is ready to go for the venetian plaster this product the the water resistant gypsum powder is also a great product if you're familiar with german schmear to do a german schmear technique and on like an interior fireplace or even on the exterior of the house because this product can be used outside german shmerry you're just going to mix some paint with it mix it up to the consistency you want and start traveling on i'm going to have a video on that coming up here in the near
