BEST TOOL For Painting Cabinets! LED Inspection Light.

this chris idaho painter here on paint life tv today in this video i'm going to show you how to come up with your own inspection light bar as we got sitting here that way when you do the cabinet painting process and the prepping and sanding process you can find any little nick or ding on there that needs to be sanded out bonded or filled prior to painting them i got an inspection bar sitting right here it's not all complete yet but we're going to show you and talk about where i got the bar from how i got it to the point where i can plug it right into the wall and use this as an inspection light in the cabinet painting process so stay tuned for this video [Music] okay here we go we're gonna get ready and we're gonna start putting together and assembling a light bar to you'll have this situation where we can light up a table where we can see imperfections in cabinet doors to make our cabinet door painting process a lot more efficient and where we can just get all the nicks and dings out of them it's really critical that you do have a light bar i've got this one sitting right here from me and i did the search when i wanted to get a light bar eventually to do my cabinet repaints and have one that's out on the job site and something mobile i can take with me i did a lot of research on the internet and it took me literally about three to four days to even find a light bar that i can purchase that actually had enough power that would light up a table that would show everything on there there were a couple options out there at some really ridiculous astronomical prices i think it was like seven hundred dollars six seven hundred dollars just for a light bar to do cabinet on refinishing in the repaint industry and i just thought that that was absolutely crazy is like there's got to be a better simpler way that's more cost effective so in my research i found this light bar right here and this is a light bulb shipped to me and it just comes in two pieces and i was kind of shocked when i first got it because i thought it was you know the whole bar ready to go and i would just plug it in and i'd be able to use it so it's this light bar right here and i guess you would call this a transformer or whatever it powers the light it came also detached it was just these two black cords right here and i was like oh my gosh so now i've got a light i've got a light i got a transformer and um i'm sure somebody's going to correct me because it may not be called the transformer but i'm not electrician so anyways it came with the cord and the cord um to my amazement shock or whatever it was just right here the cord was just cut off right here it wasn't attached to anything else this is an extension cord i purchased to make the attachments we're going to walk you through show you this entire process of doing this and what it looks like to do each one of these steps you know right now so you can have yourself a light bar when i was all said and done the light bar costed me i think i i the the ship the shipping was kind of ridiculous it was like 75 to ship it and so once i had it shipped got to my house purchased the electrical cord and all these components i think i was about 300 dollars into the light and it took me probably an hour or less to make this whole thing until i got it completely finished i actually had one already done it was in my paint life academy we were using it to do cabinets one of the students saw it liked it so much asked if he could buy it and take it back you know to use it on a job he had going the next day so i sold it to him so that's why i'm making another one now because i need another one all right now we're all ready to start the process of connecting our two cords together so i have my transformer right here it's got a black wire coming out it's got a three wires in it it's got a and i would they call it a brown i would call it maybe a pink i don't know a red but um looks this will call it brown a blue and a green and on my extension cord that i bought i cut it right here cut about i don't know it's about four feet off of it right there i separate it i've got a green i got a white and a black so you need to know which ones go where and i looked it up online to save you a little bit of headache but right here it tells you we've got acl acn and green so the green we're going to attach our green to our green we're going to attach the white goes to the blue and then the brown or red right here it's actually brown but it's kind of weird looking the brown goes to the black so we've got our butt ends and we're just going to attach those three things and the reason why we're attaching it with butt ends i'm going to be using butt ends right here these are number 15 butt slices right here i do this so it'll look really nice and professional i want a professional look and i look right here that is going to be attached and it's not going to come separated i actually take butt splice them then i wrap them with electrical tape then i heat shrink them right here with heat shrink and one thing you got to remember is put your heat streak tape on first because it's only so big and it won't fit over the end of the extension cord if you forget to do it i'm going to be using two because the distance between these two is almost about the distance that uh my heat shrink tape is so i'm going to overlap them because i want to make sure that your both ends of the cords overlapped you know by about a half inch or so so i'm going to use two heat straight tapes i'm going to put them both on my cord so i'm going to put them on now just slide them up and out of the way and then i'm going to use my butt slice butt splices right here so make sure once again green goes to the green we have a green wire so it's green and yellow stripe but that's going to go to the green end on my extension cord you want to make sure these are soldered ends if they're not soldered and they're just loose wires make sure you twist them and then when i put on my butt splices i put it on and actually twist it in the same direction that i twisted the wire and then i'm going to take crimp that just grip it tightly check it make sure it's on there do the next one once again green goes the green and we'll start off i'm going to put my green wire on make sure it's all the way in crimp that tightly make sure it's together so green goes to green blue goes to white now black goes to brown i'm just going to make sure these are all crimped nice and tight so these are all secure so i got black electrical tape and this is just going to be under my heat shrink tape and this is just going to be that you know added measure to keep these things together and keep them from you know pulling and pulling apart i'm going to wrap some around the wires right here on these ends where they come out of the butt splices because we don't want them pulling out of those butt slices tight connection right there what i used to do on my previous cars before i was using heat shrink tape i just would wrap these all the way up and all the way down with electrical tape and i would just leave it just like that and these would be done just like you know once they're fully wrapped but it just doesn't have that really nice clean look that the heat shrink tape adds to it and i'll show you how much better it'll look so i'm going to get it where it's about overlapped about half inch now i'm just going to use a propane torch and it shrinks like really fast just tap tap tap so that one's already shrunk i'm just going to press it make sure it's nice and tight i'm going to just slide my other one on and overlap that one and make sure this one goes over the extension cord it's the same process it does have a connection right here you can um disconnect the light [Music] right here from this connection for any reason if you wanted to connect it from the cord the instructions they do say to the first time you plug it in make this connection let the light light for about five minutes make sure there's no heat if this thing gets really hot this connection is not connected properly once you push it in there it actually clicks tight and it's on there nice and secure we got a nice professional looking butt spliced cord attached to our transformer right now so here we go we got we had one right here we had to do then we also had the end on the light so we've got our light attached to our core now we have our piece of wood that we're going to mount it on so what i want to do is this i'm going to only have about yo about about an in let's see we'll call it about inch and a half two inches i'll measure that make a mark or i'm going to cut that we're going to cut that right we'll make a mark where we're going to cut the board right here so we just have about an inch or so left over i'm going to cut that the saw you can just use a hand saw i'm just going to use a chop saw it does kind of have a round routed edge so i'm going to route that edge too because i want that to look nice and clean and then we will take and paint this and then we'll attach it to our piece of wood and our light bar will be good and ready all right now we've got our base plate for our inspection light all painted all ready to go now the simple process of just attaching this thing on here i'm just going to screw it right on the center it right in the middle and screw it on just get a small enough screw screw it's not going to go all the way through your board [Music] the light didn't come with these screws it came with machine screws like if you're going to hook it to something metal our light is mounted to a nice sturdy plate where it can't tip over can't fall off of the table and we'll oh no this is the table that i actually use i use a table this one right here to do my sanding and inspecting so i'll plug it in to our extension cord that we manufactured right here it's all done and this is i typically never unplug this once it's plugged in and there we go there is our inspection table the light you know you can tighten it or loosen it and you can adjust the light right here to give you you know the reflection needed on your table right here so there you go i can see a lot now all of a sudden a whole bunch of things showed up right here on this cabinet door i can switch them right here look at this cabinet door you can move it around see this one right here we got a gap right here a couple gaps and you can see i can adjust this light and it'll just give me a different cast across here there it is an inspection light this is a absolute must have when you're doing cabinet doors if you're really doing high-end cabinet doors and you want to get that that perfect finish
