Christmas Ornament- Damascus Paring Knife

What happens here

After forging, heat the knife blank once more in the forge until it reaches a non-magnetic state. This temperature is critical for proper hardening (normalization). Immediately after reaching this state, quickly transfer the hot blade into a bath of warm oil (such as canola oil or car oil). Submerge the blade fully and hold it still until it cools down completely. This rapid cooling process, known as quenching, hardens the steel.

Goal: Harden the forged steel blade.

Tools and materials

  • Oil Bath — Holding the quenching oil
  • Tongs — Handling the hot blade
  • Warm Oil — Quenching the hot blade to harden it
