What happens here

This video details the initial phase of building an off-grid yurt, focusing on the construction of its elevated platform. It covers site preparation, drilling deep footings for stability, setting and concreting structural posts, and assembling the initial subfloor framing. The project emphasizes building off the ground to prevent moisture issues in a cold climate, highlighting the costs and considerations involved in such a construction.

good morning good evening good afternoon you guys we're going deep in the woods where I'm going to be building an off-grid small tiny home with no power no electricity no running water no resources whatsoever and I'm going to take you along for the ride and I'm also realized as as I was trying to pick out what kind of tiny home that I wanted to build that there was a lot of misconceptions about tiny homes out there and we're going to be looking at some of those and explaining to you some of the research that I found out while we get into the build so without wasting more time let's just Dive Right into today's video [Music] good morning you guys we are on day one of a new build now we're going to be installing a yurt up in northern Minnesota and my daughter and her boyfriend Cassidy and her boyfriend Tarzan are going to be attempting to live in it over the course of the winter but before we can do that we've actually got to build the platform that the yurt sits on so we're going to walk you through the platform build today and then if you hit that subscribe button coming up you're going to see us building the pla the the year to itself and then since we're up in northern Minnesota which is like Canada light we actually need some uh Heating and Cooling up here because we got hot summer days real humid but we got frigid winter nights it gets cold and it gets cold fast up here but we're going to have our helpers today are going to be Cassidy Thomas Frankie and I are going to start doing the layout and then after we get the layout done Zach and Bob will be coming out to give us a hand so sit back relax and hope you guys enjoy today's build let's get things started okay so before we start drilling let's see what we've got the orange markers indicate our our footings so we've got a center line and then we've got the perimeter footings all marked out this is going to be a 24 foot yurt and we're actually going to be building it on us pretty decent slope so the idea is the front of the Year platform is all of the year has to be off the ground because if you have it on the ground or if you have a deck around it and it's all ground level when the snow hits it's going to lean up against the Earth and that's going to create water problems so everything is going to be built off from the ground the front is going to walk out and face that way trying to do that and the back is going to be off the ground every time I turn I'm just going to wreck my our paint holes we lined up still pretty good Frankie it's over five yeah we're good is that hole need to be cleaned out more are we okay we're okay okay I'm going to the next one how deep is it you're getting four feet is what you get four and a half that's gonna have to work you want to go deeper or are we okay we're using a 12 inch auger blade and we're going five foot deep on all of our footings we're gonna actually be burying the posts underground but we are going to be adding a concrete footing to the post just for stabilization but without any power or electricity it can be a little bit of a challenge which is a perfect test for a cement mixer called the gravity mixer ready so next we're going to start laying out the pose footings but while we're doing that I want to share some of the information that I realized as I was doing my research on different tiny homes and options out there and one of those is with most tiny homes there's not more value per square foot in a tiny home than there is in a regular home like you see right here and what I mean is is you're it's you're getting a tiny home but you're not getting a tiny budget a house like this costs anywhere from 200 to 250 dollars per square foot to build now if you take the cost of a tiny home which I've seen some of these tiny homes going for sixty thousand dollars plus and you divide that by the amount of square footage you're getting you're not paying less for a tiny home than you would if a regular home you're just getting less square footage [Music] this tiny home elevated up off from the ground just because we can but this is going to add another layer of expense to this project because when we build it up off from the ground we've still got to insulate that bottom floor span and that's what you're going to see us doing is building a false cavity and filling that full of insulation now in the next video I'm going to get more into the expense of a yurt versus a tiny home but I don't want to leave you guys hanging a typical yurt build like we're doing here costs anywhere from 14 to 24 000 for the yurt frame itself the roof the covering and the structure but the decking that you've seen us building in today's video costed an additional seven to nine thousand dollars for all of the material and labor involved to get the deck where it's at when you add the yurt frame with the yurt decking we're still under 40 fifty thousand dollars and that adds up to a four and that gives you 459 square feet inside of the yurt with a 12 foot ceiling so a lot of people buy into these small homes hoping to have a small budget but really they're paying the same price per square foot as you would typical construction with a yurt you can get by for less than half of that and still have what feels like a lot of space and in fact in the next video coming down the pipeline I'm going to actually walk you through the yurt construction how they get built they're insulated and the key components to look for when you're buying a yurt so make sure you hit that subscribe button and make sure you come back because we're going to take you through the rest of this process one right after the other but I hope you enjoyed today's ride and we'll catch you guys on another one God bless go get em you guys foreign [Music]
