What happens here
This project provides a comprehensive guide on how to construct a yurt from a kit, covering the assembly of the foundational elements, the intricate lattice wall structure, the roof rafters, and the crucial central compression ring. It details the installation of reflective insulation and the weather-resistant exterior canvas, culminating in the fitting of windows and doors, and the final placement of the roof dome. The project emphasizes the strength and weather resistance of the yurt's design, particularly for colder climates, highlighting the importance of a robust internal structure beyond just the exterior lattice.

(16,928 characters)[Music] foreign [Music] good evening good afternoon you guys my name is Stan genetic they call me the dirt monkey and we have kind of a special video today because we're going to be building a tiny home from scratch we've already got the base installed but the rest of the structure from the bottom all the way up to the roof crushes is going to be put in and installed in less than a week they call this tiny home a yurt and we're actually going to be meeting with a yurt Builder someone that does these things day in and day out and we're going to be asking him questions like how much does it cost to build a year how long will a year last can you use a yurt in severe weather in severe climates and a whole bunch of other questions that if you're looking at buying a tiny home you're probably already asking and I'm going to try to get those answers for you in today's video [Music] [Applause] yeah yeah it'll be fine I've like asked people that have Yurts and they're like definitely not you cannot do that there's no way if you put like pressure on one side the whole thing will fall down no no once you've got your blocking and your studs hippie daughter wants to hang silks from the inside of a year and guys this is Zach from Texas Spirit company you know yeah you'll see when you get it up there I've heard like when you do drops and stuff I mean I don't do this like super professionally yeah but like drops can be like thousand pounds pull down yeah like when you like all your weight oh when you're spinning inside of it and you drop and you hit yeah so how much weight can the inside of it well so the uh the ring itself and well what I know is the cable which is what would be that outside compressions rated for 6 500 pounds um and so then everything else is like pinching in and then that's what's holding the force pressure out is your cable on the outside so it should be fine um I mean feel it out as you're going through it as I say I didn't realize there was a thousand pound drop at the end of a spin I don't do that yeah I'm not concerned but yeah all right guys I want to introduce you to Zach Zach how you doing yeah Zach's with Texas yours and this is Steve over here Texas your crew and we are down in Texas and we are picking up our year from these guys and we're gonna walk through where this is a brand new learning curve some of you guys it's a learning curve for you as well so actually our home kit is all sitting kind of like yeah most of it's right here yep you got your Center ring and some windows and we're using the uh actual glass windows so you got operable Windows wherever you want to put them then you got your Rafters and studs over here and then the rest of it tied in inside so let's talk about the what are your basically consists of if you wouldn't mind Zach so can you break it down so we've got a framework and this is a two by a true two by six construction framework with a rafter system them yeah that's held together by a compression ring in the top yep yep and then has a dome on top of that on top of that yep lots of glass Dome and these were a little tiny bit of History Mongolian year yeah that's where it originated from you know the Mongolians were the nomadic people so they were packing them up moving them around and these things you know I'd say they're kind of semi-permanent at this point like if you wanted to tear it down and move it you absolutely could uh and if you wanted to stay in one place for the next 30 Years you absolutely could do that too it's all just how you tie it in and what you want to finish it out with so like 24 foot we're getting a 24 foot you're she's going to live in it year round and you said it takes two to three days to set that up for a couple guys that may be familiar with it yeah yeah and a week for somebody that's just yeah never really touched any of this stuff before and it comes with a full instructional manual and you know we're here for technical support in case you get stuck anywhere and figure it all out but they go pretty quick it's I like to call it Advanced Ikea is what I tell everybody okay all right so we're back for day two of building the yard all right today we are going to be putting the roof on this each of these boards are especially notched that's this part right here especially not for the cable and this part is specially notched to go into this thing which will sit dead center of the sky okay and then has this glass Plexiglas Dome because that ain't glass if that's just over the top of this and each one of those go into these slots these slots right here then that's gonna fan out around the top latching onto that cable and that's what holds the roof up it's just that little cable yeah yeah I don't wouldn't believe it either and if you watch any videos on Yurts being built the some people even are amazed by it's just that cable as well so just sit back and enjoy so we you've got the frame and then these are actually insulated yeah yeah it's coming with insulation so you can put them anywhere you know down here in Texas we're dealing with the heat and a lot of people are throwing a mini split in these things you put a mini split in this and I walked into a guys the other day it was 105 outside he had oversized as many split it was like 68 degrees inside is yours what's a mini split yeah yeah it's like a it's a paired down version of like an AC heating unit gotcha yep yep and those work great in these things but you know up North for you guys you throw a wood stove in there you'll stay warm all winter long now you've got Windows here and those aren't locked into any one position so you can angle these anywhere you want anywhere throughout the year so wherever your yurt specifically where you want that view at you're able to place them just in between two Rafters and that's your only limitation but that'll give you a lot of flexibility anywhere you want to span them okay so cool let's go inside and check out the rest of the system yeah because then you've got your walls in there and some other stuff that's the top yeah that's so that's your Dome so then it's a Plexiglas Dome on top and then we've got another ring on the outside and that'll just after you've wrapped everything this is the last step you'll put that on top of your Center ring and then it down and then you screw up and it sucks it all down and that'll give you your Skylight right there all right as you can see yeah we've got the walls up the door frames in got the cable strung around the top okay it only took only a day to get to this point it would have been quicker if we actually knew what we were doing for the first hour or so if we did every day yeah it'd be we'd probably zip this thing out already today but so this is the installation right here that's the old yacht shop so here's your insulation you've got your cones cut for your roof pieces and those you'll just pop up through your Center ring hole when you're doing it and lay them out and they just you unfold them and as they go they follow that Circle and so it's two halves you'll start with one half and then do the other and then you'll wrap your walls with just a straight line so it'll take two wraps of this four foot wide insulation you wrap it around once and then you staple it on either end you wrap it again and then that top piece will fold over so we create a seal with all the insulation and they'll meet and then you'll tape that line together and then you've got your insulated seal for for the Earth and then we got your walls over here with the lattice strips and those are ready to go so this is the actual interior wall that yeah the the strength of the Year between the compression ring on the top right right and these walls right here so these uh they all accordion style in and out so for transport you got them so they're all folded all the way up but when you go to do install they'll fold out to 88 inches is the height that we do so you fold it out to 88 and then you tighten down all your bolts and then you're ready to set your wall up so once it's completely folded up we're hitting the 88 on the Chevron yep okay and how tall is the goal in the center like when it's yup so for the center ring on a 24 is 12 and a half feet up high so you're going to be working from 88 up to 12 and a half up to 12 and a half foot tall yep okay what about doors out of those yeah we got your door cut out there so that's actually the very first thing you're going to start with when you start the build if you set your door wherever you want and then you put a couple braces in to hold that into place and then you'll start by unfolding a wall and it's got a connection panel on the side of the door that that wall will just screw into and then you do all your walls so you wrap back around and then screw into the other side and then that's what holds that whole initial base together out of the entire build I was told that getting that Center cone up is the most difficult part [Music] behind my boots [Music] show me [Music] the soil and the dust is where we go [Music] burns my throat since she falls down my spine so do you think that this is enough insulation for um yeah absolutely yeah for Minnesota winner yeah yeah you guys will be fine like I said as long as you got a heat Source going it's gonna hold it in there good for you guys so here's your door yeah this is just the framework for it so this will fit a standard 36 by 80 pre-hung door uh so we get a lot of people doing all sorts of different stuff and some people want a classy door some people just want something that opens but then right on top you'll see we got a couple eye Hooks and that's where you'll start your cable you'll get a turnbuckle to go in between those and then you run that cable all the way around through the top crotch on all the lattice strips and then back around and then you'll tie it in together and then you just crank that turnbuckle until you get to the right diameter on your ring um on that cable ring and that's like the most important measurement that you'll end up doing when you're doing the whole thing and what are we looking at right next to it yeah you got your window boxes so these would be what your windows will sit inside of so you'll place you'll start by placing this initial frame under two windows or under two Rafters and then once you got that in you'll go through and you'll cut out the lattice strip that sits over it so you've got a full Clear View then you put the box in there screw that in and then after you're done covering you'll put your window in here and that'll screw into this and then you'll clock around it for a seal so you can have as many windows and doors as you like yeah up to a certain point the circle will only allow for so many uh before you start breaking it up too much but you can put quite a few in each one the bigger size you go the more windows you can get obviously now this also to me says that I've got to cut that canvas yep is that right yep yep and so what how what's the process for that like yeah so as you're doing your wrap uh and you're going through and you start with that liner and then you go through to the insulation to your exterior canvas each step of the wrap you're going to cut that window box square out and then one once you get all the way done and you've got that hole in there what you're going to do is you're going to you're going to fold the interior liner and the insulation in and then that exterior liner over just that little side piece on the window frame and then that clocks down and then you've got a perfect rain rain stopping seal on that thing and it'll be good to go any specific caulk that we got to worry about I've got caulk for you so we prefer to use the quad Max Pro so we got a box of hardware for you for all the stuff uh all your screws nuts bolts caulk tape everything you'll need so not all Yurts are built the same if you guys are in the market for your just double check how yours are built in Minnesota we've got snow load we've got to have the strongest possible structure we can get and the one thing that I like about Zack's yours is they're actually not held together just by that lattice that you've seen on the outside it actually has a two by six stick framed wall on the inside which is connected into the rafters which go up to the central compression ring which holds everything together solid as one unit and another thing about Zach is he said that he would be available at any time while we were doing the build if we wanted to get him on the phone and had a question well my daughter and her boyfriend sure did Leverage that more than once let's go see how this build is going how do the vertical posts mount to the uh rafters so yep what we typically do down here is just toenail them in uh with the screws right right under it so they fit them underneath and then draw that line you know take them uncut and then hold them up next to the rafter draw that angle and then cut that angle with circular saw tuck it up under there and then we'll just toenail it into the into the rafter and into the floor I think with hurricane ties too if you wanted to use those so you could go either way very good sweet do you guys have any more questions I don't know um I'll probably have more questions eventually yeah for sure no feel free to call text whatever so all right thanks man talk to you later all right so this ends day three of building the yurt we got a little fully in all the support struts that go down to each got the windows in you need to cut them out a little while to laugh if everything is screwed down on the floor or excited is screwed to the left other than the windows which are screwed all the way around to make sure that the lat holds together when we go to cut it and then there's gonna be a deck right here eventually yeah that's probably a little more down the road so now we're just more or less just waiting on the canvas [Music] all right so we're all wrapped up with day four or today we had uh cut out the window slits to put in the window frame that comes with them hurricane brackets so that way so if you're handy you can build the your yourself and that's what I did I wanted to document exactly what it took for some guys that never seen a year or knew nothing about it what it really truly took to put this thing together but if you don't want to build it yourself you don't have to Zach with Texas your company will actually come out to your site and build the year for you now in today's video what I did was I actually bought the kit from Zach and went down to Texas so I could meet him and get the information they bring to you guys but Zach partnered up with Steve Cairo or Cairo c-a-r-o from Great Lakes your company to supply the canvas and the canvas is what's coming next so let's dive into putting that on because that's what we need to wrap up this build thank you I was walking by the ocean feeling all emotion when she came right up next to me I got caught up in the moment felt like we were frozen like it was literally meant to be the time [Music] guys we've got to hoist this circle all the way up to the top Frankie has done his best to create a circle lasso now we'll see if it works Up Up and Away right yeah right when you're ready just dive away [Music] [Applause] [Music] so from the outside just looking at that yard is a little bit misconceiving because it looks teeny tiny but the inside of that year is about the same size as a two-car garage so if you have access to step into a two-car garage that'll give you the same idea of how much space you'll have in a year except the problem is a two-car garage has a really low ceiling and the year has a really tall ceiling and the closest thing I can compare it to for you guys is my barn the year is actually bigger than my barn so when we walk in here and take a look around the year actually has more space than in here it's kind of crazy and I would take you to the yurt but I'm nowhere near it right now so this gives you the idea of how much space you would have in a year it took us less than a week to install and cost less than twenty four thousand dollars for the kit and we got the fancy kit the platform cost us another seven to nine thousand dollars so for under thirty five thousand dollars we got ourselves an insulated weather type tiny home but that's not we're not done with this yet there's still more to this bill we've got the structure up now we've got the challenge of heating and cooling it without access to electricity or any other natural resources that are out there and that'll be coming up in a future video but I hope you guys enjoyed the ride today and if you're in the market for a tiny home I hope somehow that this video may have helped you out that's it for this one God bless go get them you guys we'll catch you on another one foreign
