Broken Tub/Shower Valve Repair
What happens here
The new Moen 1222 Posi-Temp cartridge usually comes with a small plastic removal tool. Insert this tool over the brass stem of the old cartridge. Then, use an adjustable wrench or channel locks to grip the tool and gently rotate it left and right to loosen the cartridge. Once loosened, pull the cartridge straight out. The video demonstrates using both the plastic tool and an adjustable wrench (or channel locks) to rotate and pull the cartridge free. Note that the old cartridge might be brittle and break apart during removal.
Goal: With the retaining clip removed, the old Moen 1222 cartridge can now be extracted from the valve body, often requiring a specialized tool or pliers.
