What happens here
This project provides a comprehensive guide on how to revitalize a running toilet by replacing its ballcock (fill valve), flush valve, and tank-to-bowl gasket. The process involves draining the toilet, removing old components, cleaning the tank, installing new universal replacement parts from Korky, adjusting water levels, and ensuring the tank is stable with shims.

(14,320 characters)hey folks that fix the guy here and if you've seen my channel you know that i use a lot of fluid master stuff as far as universal stuff goes i really like it well they didn't have any they were completely sold out the only thing they had were quirky universal filled out kits and so that's what we're gonna be installing today i got this old school crane toilet right here it needs a complete rebuild because honestly it does not look so good in there i think it's the the tank to pull gasket actually on the flush valve that's gone bad and so we might as well just replace everything so come along let's get to fixing [Music] [Applause] you want to have the instructions when you're installing this bad boy here's what we got this is a quirky universal complete kit made in the usa it says it replaces old technologies i don't know if this fluid master is actually that old but this old ball style certainly is we're going to be installing one of these quiet fill proven the quietest fits all brands efficient and compact like really it's pretty similar right and it's the same price point and they just didn't have what i was looking for but corki makes quality stuff they do have a quarter turn shut off so first thing you want to do make sure your water's off make sure you have a positive shutoff if you don't have one here you might have to go down you might want to replace the valve right you see me do this in other videos i'm just going to add one of these discussions i hope that it actually fits over this hole it looks like it's almost the same size look at that so we've come over to the left side which is where our valve should have been anyway and it should be right down here you ever want to know the placement just go to the middle of your toilet down here go over six inches and then go up seven and that's usually where the placement is going to be all right now that everything's shut off we can go ahead we can give our toilet a flush and just hold the handle down get as much water out as you can we'll just pop this off this shouldn't be more than hand tight really so now i've got a bucket that i'm going to have sitting right down underneath here and we're going to have one hand holding down our fill valve that way it's not going to leak and with your left hand i'm going to loosen that up a little bit [Applause] and then just release we can pop this off and this whole piece is going to be out of our hair we always hope when we're doing the bolts that these bolts are actually going to come undone the bumper part is the top of these bolts are so corroded that we're actually we're not going to be able to put a screwdriver on those so we just gotta hope that these other ones come off i'm trying to get these tank to bowl bolts off you can try with a crescent wrench you can try with a little pair of channel locks you can try with a nut driver i mean there's a lot of different tools right and i end up going with a socket usually i like a deep well socket because you've got to get down in there let's see if we can get this hooked up with this and make it easy here's the open let's see oh it actually came off that is awesome [Music] man oh yeah dude that is super wobbly too crazy crazy how wobbly that was so now you can either sponge the rest of this water out or once your bolts are off a little bit more you can just take your whole tank and tip it over that hole and get the rest out of there so then i just like to take an old towel i like to cover the toilet seat grab your tank and just set that right up on the toilet seat so the tank to bowl gasket stayed we can just pop that off remove it give this a spray let's get this all cleaned up so this filth ring doesn't come off here you're gonna have to scrub it just come to the back side okay we'll take these bolts we'll pop them through there's a couple different wrenches you could use for this you could use a bigger crescent wrench i typically end up using some big old channel lock style pliers to get in on this but if you needed to and all you had was a smaller set these 440s you could still totally do this job with them right it's just bigger pliers make it a little bit easier but i'm just going to show you like it can be done so now it totally helps to grab this and actually hold this from the front side while you're spinning the nut now we're just going to poke this through here and let's just get all this cleaned up real quick so now we got this flipped around and hooked up one thing i forgot to do which i mean i guess it doesn't matter what order you do it but take the chain off the handle we're actually be reusing the handle the handle is in good shape not a big deal but now everything is able to come out of here you can see that that black washer has turned white and is just i mean deteriorating like crazy check those out dude that's a funky little setup let's try to get this all cleaned up when going with the new installation we are going to start with the flush valve itself okay check her out this bad boy is going to be the first thing to go in we are going to leave this red gasket on we're going to take this friction ring that's what this this is you know remember on the collar it was plastic this is just a cardboard friction ring it goes with this knot and just allows you to get a good tight seal on this we're going to take this we're going to put this in here and we're going to kind of put it at like a 45 okay that way it's not blocking one of the bolt holes over here you can access both of those and just get that at a 45 towards the back now we're going to flip it around we get that there you might want to hold it from the back side just to keep it in place that way you're going to ensure a good tight seal and just snug this up it says when you're installing the mounting nut on this fill valve it says hand tighten mounting nut only i'm going to tell you some people's hand tight is way different than others right so i like to put just a little bit of a snug on it guys and that's what we're looking like and that's in there it's tight it's not going anywhere next we'll grab our bolts there's actually three bolts because this is universal so you're going to have one complete setup left that you might use for something else another time to go into the tank it only requires this rubber washer and the bolt okay we'll get both of those set up and then we just pop these through the bottom so next is the fill valve and i wanted to show you something with this i was fiddling around with it and just checking out the new adjustment on this and it's quite awesome right because all you're going to do is go counter clockwise you're going to pull down adjust where you want and then turn it clockwise and it doesn't move so i usually like to line up the hose with the flush valve itself okay it just makes for an easy transition so if you just get that sitting right like that it should be a good placement turn this back around we grab our ring it's not really towards the tank but i like to go just a little bit past hand tight some of these these days like the fluid master they say oh you can do it hang hand tight and you're good i personally like to go just a little bit past that so now we're ready to add the tank to bowl gasket and all that's going to do is just slide over here pretty tight fit oh man it's actually a really tight fit get that pushed back down on there as far as you can these are going to be a little bit wobbly it might be a little bit harder than a fluid master to try to put this in place because these are not solid but they will make a good seal once we tighten them up flip it over get the holes lined up and it's not gonna oh nope pop the bolts out that usually works but this is gonna be a lot easier okay pop the bolts out take this set it right down on there hold this in place grab your bolts and just take your bolts and slide them in that's going to be easier all right so now this is in there you want to take your washer and your nut and just get that hooked up and kind of get it started do the other side so we ran out we grabbed our 7 16 nut driver and we're just going to start tightening you want to tighten evenly a little bit on this side a little bit on that side these red gaskets in here they're totally meant to compress and you see this little dimple right here in this little dimple right here we should be able to actually just take this down and set this toilet flush we know that it's going to be snug and it's going to be sealed i don't necessarily like it so personally at this point i've tried tightening this and getting it stable and i'm not a fan it actually is not going to really sit the way that i feel comfortable leaving it and i i don't like that so as i was tightening this tank it still had some wobble in it what i'm going to do is i'm actually going to take some of these rubber shims that i have and i am going to wedge these in between the tank and the bowl we're still going to get the seal that we want we're just not going to have that much pressure to where i feel like i'm going to crack the tank right so far for me this is not that grand um i don't like when you have a wobbly tank right and nobody's gonna want that so i loosen this all back up and i'm just gonna pop these shims i'm gonna put one right here i'm going to put one over on the other side like that and i'm going to cut this one down a little bit and i'm going to stick it right here on this back part and i love these little rubber shims too man they have a bunch of different uses they're usually used for shimmering toilets but for something like this this is totally going to be good let's get that set right where it is and we might end up just pushing them down a little bit more we might have to move them around as we get started it's already way tighter than what it was and it's just compressing on rubber so we got to come down a little bit more on this side and you can see that red gasket in there it's plenty compressed it was a fat gasket it's going to have no problem setting like this and our tank is going to be more stable now all right and our tank is level we don't really have a lot of movement which is awesome it's very sturdy so the bottom of this is about nine and a half so let's just take this overflow tube to about eight and a half was pretty close boom right there and we tighten that up now that that's hooked up let's go ahead and let's just adjust our chain real quick let's get this all situated and set up i'm going to end up going to the middle hole with this chain and then you want a little bit of a dangle in it right you don't want it to be taut you want just a little bit this adjustment is going to vary right it's really going to depend on your handle i'll usually leave three or four links on it just take one side of this and you can just clamp one of these down and then remove that now we want to adjust our fill valve we're going to probably have to do this a couple times but remember in order to adjust this this is fully on right now you just take this click it over be able to raise this up to the height that you want let's go with right around where the toilet tank almost flush with it see how that looks we'll just go over this way you're going to get this set in place and now it's not going to be able to go up and down you can feel it you want to make sure it actually clicks once it clicks you'd be good to go there we've got this little metal clip that we can take stick on the end of our hose that's going to go right here that is pretty easy to move and we'll just make it to where it makes a nice little movement and it's not going to get in the way of anything so look right down there you see that line and it's lined up with those knobs that's how you know that's locked in place so let's take our supply line let's get that cranked on i'm gonna reach back over here on the other side and we'll slowly turn the water back on so to achieve the maximum flush let me show you what i had to do this thing tricky ricky really there's a lot to this flapper something i didn't even realize from before is that you can actually spin this piece right here and you can get that hole and for something like this this older style toilet you're gonna want that hole like i want it to flush the top half of the toilet and so i actually had to use a pair of channel locks to get this over because i couldn't get it to move but reading the instructions i knew there was this little hole here or at least it could be achieved so i just had to spin it with my channel locks and then i ended up setting this to four okay so you just gotta play with it and you gotta constantly tweak it once you get your water height then you're gonna be good to go this little knob right here also helps set your your bowl height but it also helps with the splash so i actually just took the splash away i think that the height is good enough and man you're really just gonna have to play with this for your particular toilet let's get her filled back up and i'll show you the flush i think that's about as good as we're gonna get all right let's just get down here we'll look everywhere for leaks so you can't even tell there are any shims there until you get down underneath it and behind it but everything is good there are no leaks we're good to rock and roll here i really hope you folks are enjoying the channel i hope that this helps you out with at least a little tip or a trick or something if you get stuck in the scenario um please subscribe to the channel follow us over on facebook um check us out on tick tock instagram you know we're trying to do some more things we're trying to spread out the more we can do that the more people we can help that's it i'm gonna go home i'm gonna read my kids some books and i'm gonna chill thank you very much and we'll see you again real soon having to shim the toilet tank to make it work to make it feel like i wasn't gonna break it or the homeowner wasn't gonna break it at some point like my friend that would have been a horrible dude your friend's sitting on the toilet all of a sudden the toilet take breaks it cracks floods everything crazy scenario she'd be like man that wasn't worth a box of cherries at all this is insane
