Before any work begins on the pipe, shut off the main water supply to the house. Open faucets elsewhere to drain the water from the lines. Place a pan under the work area to catch any residual water. For this new construction, the pipe is cleaned with sandpaper. Then, a pipe cutter is used to trim the pipe to the desired length, about 2-3 inches from the wall. Clamp the cutter, rotate it around the pipe, and tighten the knob with each revolution until the end of the pipe breaks off. Allow the remaining water to drain completely. A decorative shallow flange can be slid over the pipe to cover the hole in the wall. Finally, the end of the pipe is thoroughly cleaned again with sandpaper to ensure a good surface for soldering.
