Use two spanners/wrenches to fully tighten the fitting onto the copper pipe. Tighten the compression nut onto the fitting using one spanner. Use another spanner on the other nut on the fitting, if there is one, to hold it securely. If there isn't a nut to tighten against, place the second spanner on the hex-shaped flats of the fitting itself. Ensure that the second spanner is positioned to apply pressure against rotation of the first spanner. Tighten the nut just enough to feel pressure and resistance. Do not overtighten. You can test for leaks once the water is turned on and tighten slightly if a small leak is detected.
