Step 12 · Test Heating and Cooling Systems

Using the new thermostat's interface or the mobile app, set the thermostat to a temperature that will engage your heating system (e.g., set it several degrees above the current room temperature). Listen for your furnace to turn on and feel for warm air. After testing heating, set the thermostat to a temperature that will engage your cooling system (e.g., several degrees below the current room temperature). Listen for your air conditioner to turn on and feel for cool air. Turn the thermostat back to your desired comfort setting or to an 'auto' mode.
