Step 5 · Frame the Walls

Cut studs, top plates, and bottom plates (sole plates) from 2x4 lumber. Layout and assemble each wall flat on the floor, typically with studs spaced 16 inches on center. Frame openings for doors and windows with headers, king studs, and jack studs. Once assembled, raise each wall into position on the floor frame, ensuring they are plumb (vertical) and square, and then securely fasten them to the floor and to each other.
