Step 5 · Caulk the Spout and Test Operation
To prevent water from splashing behind the wall, apply a thin, continuous bead of 100% silicone caulk around the top and sides of the tub spout where it meets the wall. Leave the bottom un-caulked to allow any trapped moisture to escape. Smooth the caulk bead with a wet finger or a caulk finishing tool for a professional look. Allow the caulk to cure fully as directed by the manufacturer (typically 12-24 hours). Once cured, turn on the water to the tub spout. Pull up the diverter knob and check that water flows properly to the showerhead and that the old leak from the tub spout has stopped.
