Step 3 · Clean and Prepare the Pipe Stub-Out
With the old spout removed, inspect the copper pipe stub-out. Use a utility knife to carefully scrape away any old caulk or plumber's putty from the wall around the pipe. Use a clean rag, perhaps dampened with mineral spirits if the residue is stubborn, to wipe the pipe and the surrounding wall tile clean. A clean, smooth surface is essential for the new spout to sit flush and for the new caulk to adhere properly.
