Step 3 · Clean the Pipe Stub

Once the old spout is removed, inspect the copper pipe stub extending from the wall. Use a rag to wipe away any old caulk, mineral deposits, or plumber's putty from the pipe surface and the wall around it. If there is stubborn caulk, you can carefully scrape it away with a plastic putty knife or a utility knife, being careful not to scratch the tub or shower surround. The pipe needs to be clean and smooth for the new spout's o-ring to create a proper seal. For a screw-on spout, this is when you would clean the threads and apply new plumber's tape.
