Ram Pump Installation and Priming
At 6:01 in
You've never seen a farm water system like this...cheap, easy no electrical required!
What happens here
A PVC pipe with multiple drilled holes is used as a filter basket to prevent debris from entering the ram pump. It is covered with a mesh material to enhance filtration. Place the filter basket into the water source (pond or creek) to allow water intake while minimizing debris. Next, connect the ram pump assembly. Siphon the water through the drive pipe to ensure it's completely filled and free of air. Any air in the system can prevent the ram pump from initiating its cycle. Once water is flowing from the initial outlet, close its valve. To start the pump, repeatedly push down on the waste valve. This action will build pressure, slamming the waste valve closed, and initiating the pumping cycle. Manual priming may be necessary initially, especially if there isn't sufficient head pressure from the source. Adjust the delivery pipe valve (partially close it) to create back pressure, which helps the pump cycle on its own.
Goal: Install the ram pump and ensure it's primed and operating correctly.
Tools and materials
- Delivery Pipe — Transporting pumped water to the destination
- Mesh Material — Covering the filter basket for finer filtration
- Poly Pipe — Connecting the water source to the ram pump
- PVC Pipe — Serving as a filter basket to prevent debris entry
- Ram Pump Assembly Land to House — The main pumping unit
- Water Source — Providing the necessary water flow and head pressure
