What happens here

The team continues to lay multiple courses of segmental retaining wall blocks. After every few courses, or as per engineered specifications, geogrid is meticulously placed on top of the laid blocks, extending horizontally into the excavated bank. The geogrid layers are then covered with gravel backfill. A plate compactor is used to compact the gravel, ensuring proper density and stability for the geogrid layers. A spirit level is frequently used to ensure each block and course is perfectly level and plumb. Drain pipes (flexible corrugated pipe) are installed behind the wall to manage water runoff.

Goal: Build up the retaining wall with sequential layers of blocks, geogrid, and compacted backfill.

Tools and materials

  • Daewoo 75V Excavator Daewoo — Moving large quantities of dirt and gravel
  • Drain Pipe — Collecting and diverting water from behind the wall
  • Geogrid — Soil reinforcement to resist lateral forces
  • Measuring Tape — Checking dimensions and geogrid placement
  • Plate Compactor — Compacting gravel backfill to achieve desired density
  • Rakes — Spreading and leveling backfill
  • Rubber Mallet — Gently tapping blocks into place and adjusting alignment
  • Segmental Retaining Wall Blocks — Building the main structure of the wall
  • Shovels — Moving and spreading backfill, minor adjustments
  • Spirit Level — Ensuring blocks are level and plumb
  • Fill Dirt — Final backfill behind the gravel drainage layer
  • Gravel — Backfilling between geogrid layers and behind the wall
