What happens here

This DIY project focuses on restoring a rusty rear axle assembly (differential and axle tubes) from a junkyard truck using a multi-step cleaning and painting process. It involves initial cleaning with oven cleaner and a pressure washer, followed by mechanical rust removal, chemical degreasing and metal prep, and finally painting with a durable rust-preventative paint. The project also includes installing new polyurethane bushings into the leaf springs and shackles to improve the suspension's performance.

I guess if you're new here you haven't seen this project yet or haven't seen the earlier videos we haven't talked about it in a while it is getting a 840 horsepower 632 big block from blueprint engines that's what that's for today we're doing something very different and when I say we're doing something very different that means I'm not going to be doing very much at all because I'm going to be inside on the computer doing paperwork if you can even call it that now digital paperwork phone calls emails stuff like that I'm going to do that and is going to be doing the rear end this rear end is for Uncle George it's a 9 and 1/2 in 14 bolt got it from a junkyard and uh this thing is going to be a beauty just like the chassis is clean my rear end you're going to clean your rear end and you're going to try your hand it filming cuz people wanted to see you do more stuff so we're just going to hand you the camera and let it roll yeah they get to see me do the most exciting stuff feel the same sometimes but you know what stuff like this can help somebody so what we're what I'll say we what she's going to do first is spray the whole thing with oven cleaner so what's your plan of attack here you already kind of know the drill from the frame well I'm going to spray the oven cleaner on it and then I'm going to power wash it off and then if it needs to use the needle in some spots which it probably will because there's like some spots that are chunky we don't have to worry too much about the diff cover because that's going to get replaced talking about this part the other side oh yeah you can turn it it should stay upright it's like crusty yeah there's chunks do all the steps like their website says to do and then it stays on there yep except you're going to do it all by yourself in preparation for the that we're going to get it's good practice for my car because it's going to be old and it's going to have a lot of rust regardless of how well kept up it was there's going to be rust so that's just the reality of buying old car yep and you get your practice on here and if you mess this up it's less critical than it is if you messed up on your own car yep screw my junk up you don't care well I know it's going to be good so okay do you think I can leave the camera with you and get to filling out paperwork yeah okay here you go well I don't know how to do this you just do that well I feel stupid update Mitchell is not a this stuff actually does bird your legs that's pretty impressive I just remembered I got to put Rob's forklift back oh good job yeah first spray off wasn't too bad got a a lot of surface rust you see some of the black paint underneath it didn't turn out too bad so far I'm going to clean it again and take the needle gun to some of these crusty pieces so I went over a few spots with the needle gun just to make sure that it's not flaking off and then I sprayed it with the power pressure washer again to make sure I get all the crust off then I'm just going to go at it with the 415 Degreaser and all that fun stuff but it looks so much better than it did getting the hang of using this camera I feel really stupid so don't make fun of me um first off after I finished cleaning this up the first step is going to be using the POR 15 Degreaser um I'm just going to spray it on there with a spray bottle I'm going to let it sit for a little bit then I'm just going to pressure wash it off and I'm going to go in there with the metal prep side note do you guys like to like listen to music while you're working on stuff I mean I know we do but we don't really get to listen to music when we're working on stuff too much unless we're like at the gym or something cuz you know copyright issues but if you were to listen to stuff or if or if we were to listen to stuff I think that I could speak for both of us that we're kind of more of like rock people we like rock music um I like really so the rear end is degreased now um so I'm going to go in with the metal prep it needs to sit on there for 30 minutes it's one of the well pretty much the key to this stuff staying on there it etches the metal so that the paint can actually stick on there I'm going to put it all over the damn rear end and let it sit for 30 minutes quick check in U this is the metal prep you can see where it's starting to work like kind of like it's not a good example let's see like these creases in here the lighting is not too great but it is what it is the areas that had less rust etch better or faster I should say but it'll all even out later it'll buff it's been on there for probably 10 minutes or so we started working already we're going to see how it's going now looks really good does looks really really good even those hoses cleaned up really good I'm actually really surprised about that in the clamp like this looks like I'd say we've got a pretty good deal this rear end was $650 which is more than you can find these for but I will say it is kind of hard to find a 9 and 1/2 in 14 bolt rear end from a/ ton that has six lug axles already your other option is to find this exact rear end from a 2500 that has eight lugs and then get the axles to switch it over but then you're on the hook for axles so if you buy a $200 rear end and have to get $400 axles and wait two months to get him with the current condition of the world did you really win I didn't think so that's why we just did this one the way it is um this was in a Z71 truck half ton it had the f44 package if it has the f44 package it should have this rear end you can check the codes in the glove box and then it'll be a six slug um one just like this and we know it will hold up because this is what's in the Escalade so it can take way more power than what it's getting exactly and we're going to put a strange Billet Yol in here which is the same one the Escalade has and we got one and Uncle Rob too and we got a a B&M uh stud girdle cover for the diff also which is going to be pretty cool one thing I don't know though is this rear end does not have sway bar perches on it like the factory one does for the factory Suburban rear end so if we want to add the sway bar we'll have to add those we might go to disc brakes I don't know if you have a good resource for that uh let us know in the comments cuz we would love to have disc brakes on the rear as well as the front maybe upgrade the fronts too don't know I have also o read on the forums this is just what I've read I don't know this to be sure but it said that the brakes on this rear end are better than the brakes on the 10 bolt that would have come in that Suburban so even though it's drum for drum they're still supposed to be better cuz what that f44 package was it had increased uh Towing payload capacity so the brakes are part of that you're doing a really good job I'm super proud of you it's crazy that like the factory kind of indicator paintt kind of showed back up all little markings of stuff on there oh you see that like this and the orange and this like paint on here that's wild definitely a southern truck I finished metal prepping the rear end and now I'm going to start painting it with the 415 I also got Sid trck and started cleaning a bunch of the other pieces that need to be painted [Music] [Applause] [Music] I'm going to check in and see what's been going on I've been on the computer all day I like this light set up we should leave those there when we put the body back on oh yeah yeah shouldn't they be something stupid like purple yeah definitely that's a good looking rear end yeah it is first coat first coat of the POR 15 base yep sweet sorry I touched stuff you told me not to touch that's okay you just don't want to glob it into the areas that have threads like that well I lightly did it because it looks yeah looks good it' be fine you did it perfect and we're going to reuse the original trailer hitch cuz it is still good we're not going to use the P 15 base on the inner fenders because one they're not Rusty too it doesn't need it cuz uh the B Cas is to go over rust so the other stuff will get the top coat over it the top coats UV protected like the same stuff that we did the overp parts of the frame RI really really getting a lot of progress here as we can also confirm that the grocery bag method of sealing the can worked perfectly you want to hear a funny story I remember that trailer hitch on my dad's 95 because this outer ring part was like dented the outer sleeve was pushed back on one spot because somebody ran into him and it screwed up their car real bad but his was fine but I just remember being like four years old standing at almost eye level with this hitch and remembering that dent in there remember him telling me about it there was also a bumper sticker on it I'm pretty sure from number one cockren Pittsburgh number one what number one Cochran yep c o c h r i n I think there's still a thing what is it just the like a dealerships oh yeah by a guy named Rob Cochran it's a horrible name yeah Le is not Richard yeah that'd be bad I'm excited once we get the that's all good to go tomorrow I'm going to work on the getting the polyurethane bushings into the leaf springs and shackles so when this is all dry we can have a rolling frame again so what's going on over here um I'm painting the inner fenders with like tror paint from yeah we ran out of top coat this is coming out really really nice you're doing a really good job conveniently the side that you said was important is side that's okay it's going to be under the truck it's all important because how you do one thing is how you do everything if you don't cut corners on 100 little things every individual instance of not cutting a corner or going the extra effort to plan out okay we're going to paint this side first then that side all those little things compound and add up to the finished product when you're like damn this is awesome like this look how pretty it is damn this is awesome before after that's really sad extremely like in this case why are you painting the insides first tires are going to kick rocks and gravel up into that be anyway yeah so if you painted if you painted this side first that's the side that's going to go in the engine bay if you painted that first then you have to lay it on there to do the inside or the the wheel side and why would you want to do that because you do like you do the least important one first then the most important after that kind of I don't know usually most cases it works that way this is going to pop whenever we have the the new cover on there and have the sway bar powder coated and all that stuff this is going to be really freaking cool yeah more of that part it's all coming together does anybody make a reproduction sticker that used to go in the hitch of these things they going to think that that's really stupid too I don't think so is it stupid to want to get a factory reproduction sticker for the factory hitch that says like um Suburban or like Yukon Tahoe payload rating and it says like do not load more than 500 lounds like little rectangle on there is that dumb to want to get a new one and stick it on there or would you guys want to do that too if everything else is going to look good leave a comment respect it because it's like your dream car that You' want since you were a little kid but if it was like like a 50s or 60s car or something you'd be like yeah I want to make it look like it just like came off the showroom before but yeah well that's how I'm treating this I know which is like what I have to like take into account when I'm doing this cuz I'm like whatever he likes it you just don't understand it if you if you think about this like it's a 1957 Chevy everything makes a lot more sense maybe 30 years ago restoring a' 7s car I was like why you doing that bro it's not that old well guess what 15 years from now whenever these things are really old whenever these things are really old ours will already already be restored we will be laughing then we will so you're doing the second coat on the inside now the rear end is done so the goal for the end of the day is to have the axle bolted back onto the frame with the new bushings and everything we got the new leaf springs here which are very heavy we're going to press out these rubber bushings and replace them these polyurethane ones with grease able Bolts from the same place Offroad Design that made the motor mounts that we had to modify uh just got these Springs from Rock Auto they're nothing special but they're new and they're nice we're doing the spring and the shackle so we got OEM GM shackles we got to press these out also and I've never had a leaf spring vehicle with any significant amount of power before so and poly bushings in there tighten everything up to reduce the possibility of wheel hop or axle wrap which it's still going to have we're going to have to do something with traction bars Cal tracks or something but this will make that less of an issue because if you think about it when the axle is boled to the leaf it's containing the twisting of the axle and it's transmitting the forward push to the frame so it's pulling on the back bushing and it's pushing on the front everything thing that the truck does powerwise in two wheel drive theoretically anyway comes from the push and pull on the leaf spring eyes so those bushings not being able to move as much will get that movement to the frame faster and more effectively does that make sense yeah yeah so let's figure out how to get this done well we did get the leaf spring bushings pressed out did not film any of it because it was one of those times where I was too angry to film it because they'll holding those things that weigh 50 lbs or whatever 4 feet off the ground and trying to do the thing I was just like no I'm not doing this they do come out there's plenty of videos on that you just won't learn that here now we get to do the fun part which is putting that back together putting the new bushings in getting the 14 bolt rolled over putting it on so I think we're just going to try to you know Baha this thing and just roll it over the thing and kind of assemble the leaves right there and then we'll take the electric jack down to bolt it up and the inner fenders you did the second coat on here they look really good it was explained to me by somebody in here that the flies go away when I leave so I just stink and I yeah see it's back it's back yeah and I'm not surprised because I've been sweating all day is humid but when I work hard I sweat a lot and I I'm just like I'm methodical about some things and other things I'm just a bowl in a china shop and I tear stuff up and I get really sweaty when I work hard thankfully though are going to be uh installing the AC here shortly fingers crossed see you beat it but it's done see the bowl and the S stop got her done is it the flip the right way no it's not it's not the right way I'm an idiot see that thought no I'm stupid I I almost said something before you did it so you wouldn't have to do it twice so my first thought was I needed to flip it around but then I thought oh no it spins I'll just spin it no I should have listened to my first thought hold on oh my god did you hear that leave a comment if you pooped today oh my God this should be the right way [Music] I don't know if this is the right way to do this or not but I don't think it's the wrong way there that's the easy one we uh I know it's going to be hard when you go the other way yeah see one side I tried putting this in then putting the sleeve in then beating the other side in that was hard and this side it did one side one side and then beat the sleeve in and it didn't like that cuz it took a little out why you do this at like the same time like it's already in there you didn't try that we did on the first one no you leave the metal part in it oh yeah we could try that everything is very tight see I'm all sweaty again I have a problem guys like that yeah bang it forward [Music] now looks like it's it yeah look at that hammer twirl didn't even hurt myself you might be thinking why don't you do the differential change and the cover and all that while the rear end is out of the truck well yeah that would be nice but we don't have it yet then we got to have this thing roll around and it's really not that big of a deal to do it with it up in the air um with it bolted in there anyway there's nothing in the way so that's why our nice pretty we end has an ugly non-painted cover because it's not going to stay there like want to night you father son holy rear end may you make a 9C 10c pass so there's an organic it's Father John does anybody out there remember Father John from my Instagram stories like pre YouTube ER I want to see who's like been there forever if you don't know who Father John is it's just my friend John Reed and he was helping me get the rear end same one 14 bolt ready for the Escalade water pipes in there were broken cuz they froze so I had the water shut off we just had a bucket and he was rinsing off the water with this bucket and he must have felt like a a priest or something and he just starts going I was like whoa whoa stop hold on let me get my phone out cuz John does that he'll go just start doing something funny and no one's even watching him like he's got no audience and he's just rolling but I know him well enough to know this is coming so I said wait stop whatever you're about to do just wait a second so I pulled my phone out and filmed this dear Lord baby Jesus we baptizing this today Father Son holy rear end may you make a 9C 10 second pass father father Holy Spirit holy and I just put Father John's baptizing my rear end and Father John was born and I still think about that often yes he does yeah I make Father John jokes all the time they actually refer to him as Father John he's not religious just guy named John but he's forever going to be Father John maybe you guys will meet him on the channel funny cuz if he I don't know he sends me a meme or something I'm like oh Mitchell Father John sent me a me yeah he's he's got an Instagram called it's father johw you should go follow him find some of that old stuff on there he still posts on it years later He's Still rocking the character he's funny okay let's get these UB bolts out of here starting to look like a truck again now we're just getting the UB bolts and stuff figured out on here and then we can lower the frame the rest of the way onto the ground all right we're we're about ready to drop this down damn yep damn it what did you do nothing there was just a bolt in here that I didn't see cuz my hat was on top of it this is the monumental moment right here oh my God it's a Suburban okay now we just have to get this bar out of here so we can put a jack under the rear end and get the weight off of this and roll this out of here and then we can have this on the ground tighten all of these up we got our was a roller this look bad oh sorry sorry guys I ruined all of this you know I had to roll go-kart through the door I had to move it unfortunately it happens sometimes so we got Uncle George back on the ground Logan did a really good job great job actually of prepping and painting everything all by herself I didn't help at all all I did is put the pressure washer away or like hook up the hose before you start working that's about all I did yeah yeah and you did awesome you're welcome it's really satisfying to see it sitting there like that we still got to torque everything down but you know it's there it's good we can move on we just wanted to have a resolution for this video so we don't just end videos on like nothing the gives your resolution it's back on the ground you can see tangible progress and if you've been here for the last couple videos we are going to have a we're going to have cooler videos soon we just have to do the boring stuff too yeah this is the work…
