OUR BIGGEST FAILURE YET 😬 On Our Biggest Deck Ever!

What happens here

Once the kitchen frame is built, half-inch HardieBacker boards are laid and screwed down onto the top surface of the wood frame. These boards will serve as the base for the concrete countertops. Next, wooden forms are constructed around the perimeter of the HardieBacker, using additional pieces of pressure-treated lumber measured down by an inch and a half to define the height and shape of the concrete slab. These form pieces are strategically screwed in from the bottom and sides to allow for easy removal after the concrete cures, minimizing damage to the finished counter edges.

Goal: Prepare the base and build the forms for the concrete countertops.

Tools and materials

  • Circular Saw — Cutting lumber for forms
  • Cordless Drill DeWalt — Screwing down HardieBacker and assembling forms
  • Pressure-Treated Lumber — Constructing the formwork for the concrete countertops
  • Tape Measure — Measuring cuts for forms
  • Wood Screws — Securing HardieBacker and formwork
