What happens here

This video details the comprehensive construction of a custom double-sided bathroom vanity. The project involves cutting and assembling a plywood carcass, building face frames, creating custom tapered legs, constructing drawer boxes, and crafting unique fluted drawer fronts. The assembly emphasizes pocket hole joinery and wood glue for durability, followed by staining and final installation of custom hardware, resulting in a modern and functional piece.

hey guys this might look like a dresser that belongs in your bedroom but really it's a double-sided vanity for a master bathroom and in today I'm going to show you exactly how I built it let's go here's a couple Inspirations that Arena sent me it's something that looks like a dresser has all drawers no doors but is actually a functioning vage I'm going to see if I can replicate this exact one we're going to start working on it I got two sheets of maple plywood it's 3/4 in now why Maple plywood it paints and stains the best 80 bucks a sheet I got two of those sheets uh I think it's going to be enough to make the carcass of it highly encourage you guys to sit down and at least write down your cut list that way you'll have better momentum as you're building this thing so I'm going to start slicing this down rough cuts on the on the tracks saw and then the finishing Cuts I like to do on the table saw with a nicer blade so it's all consistent we got the rough stuff all cut up those exactly two sheets with a little bit left over here's the plan we're going to put pocket holes on uh the bottom piece to connect it to the side and the mid pieces are going to go like that now here's one thing I did differently that I'm glad I did uh as you can see in the back here there is a 3/4 in dis uh gap between the sides and the middles reason why I'm going to have a stretcher to support it to fill it in and I did the same thing on top here there's going to be another piece of stretcher that's going to go across to make sure everything accommodates itself we're working with 3in qu 3/4 of inch material we're using inch and a qu screws these are special pocket hole screws these are in the same aisle at your hardware store then we're going to clamp this sucker to our cabinet carcass that we're about to be making we're going to take the drill bit that it comes with with a certain stop collar to tell you exactly how far to drill attach it to our drill and drill all the way through until it stops on this collar release your clamp and we have a perfect pocket hole that's concealable and strong now that we have our pocket holes let's start assembling things together wood glue all the time do not skip this process this is the real strength behind building this vanity bring the two pieces together use a little clamp these are pocket hole screws with a little adapter bit drive them in place [Music] clean up the edges reason why if that glue dries and we stay in the inside that's going to be a problem there where it's not going to be a nice clean [Music] finish all right up next we have to start creating the face frames now they will uh start making this actually look like a nice piece of furniture I've always used basically the stuff that's accessible at the hardware stores um today I'm using Oak um it's very simple it's 1X two material that's traditionally the thickness you want to use and we'll attach them the same way glue and pocket screws now the pocket screws are going to be different they're going to be meant for a hardwood not the coarse uh thread therefore it doesn't split the [Music] sucker so here's our face frame I really like it now I know you're you're wondering well how are you going to get in the plumbing well you can get through here but also it's going to be on legs so you can essentially disconnect the line that connects to the wall and then push this thing or pull it out of the way not an issue so now we're going to secure this face frame to this thing uh I'm going to add a few pocket holes on the sides here on the top and then secure it from the top bottom or wherever we need so this sucker would be pressed on hey real quick let's take up about sponsors of today's video Aura let's be honest all your family really wants for the that's available get $20 off any of their bestselling frames thanks R for sponsoring today's video now let's get back into the build of some vanity let's go for the legs I picked up this 2x2 piece of Oak um at lows it's 36 in pricey it's like 27 bucks but I don't have to go Mill any kind of wood so the legs I want them to kind of taper if you want to call it from the top and then go down obviously I can't do that here cuz I want this to be the finishing product I need to give it a little girth there so I what I'm going to do is i' I've crunched down the numbers I want it to be 4 in tall so I'm going to cut this into even blocks and then glue a couple of pieces together once they're glued I'll use my band saw to create that radius [Music] I let these legs dry overnight so now we need to create a little subtle radius I just took a a nice big bucket here that we're going to lay down here and I'm going to use my Sharpie to trace and we'll bring it over to the band side to get a nice good radius [Music] we got them cut we got them rounded over and finally sanded to 220 I'm going to glue them on right here clamp it in put a couple of pilot holes in to make sure nothing has issues Drilling in and then I'll put two screws per one each one and then we're going to have one in the front one in the back on each side and then I'll put one down the middle to kind of give it that weight so it doesn't tip over the vanity is looking great it's done the legs are on perfect I'm so excited about these legs I've never built them like that before let's start building all the drawers I guess drawers typically based off whatever Dimension you're using the width of your drawer has to be an inch smaller than the opening reason why is because every drawer slide that comes out there is half an inch so you have half an inch here half an inch there put it together that's a full inch so I got my Dimensions I'm going to start ripping this half inch Maple plywood uh it's actually a lot cheaper than 3/4 in that's why I don't go with 3/4 inch drawers uh start ripping it down and we'll put to pocket holes obviously and then for the bottom part it's going to be/ Quin plywood cheaper also lighter [Music] so all the pieces are cut for all the 12 drawers by the way now that I think about it I think it's the first time I've ever made that many drawers at once I definitely don't have enough clamps so I took the liberty of rounding over just one side of the edge this will be the top side it'll be a lot easier round it over before they're assembled uh cuz you won't get in a little Nook here the next thing is because the bottom is going to be a/ qu in heet of plywood we need to create a little Channel you can do that two ways either put a DAT stack which is a compilation of blades stacked together in your table saw with one run that will create the thickness or if you just want to do the you know the DIY way the blade that's on your table saw is an e8th of an inch you stack two of them together or make two different passes side by side then you got a whole quarter inch so that's what we're going to do we're going to make one cut and then move it over do another cut [Music] pocket holes are in we're almost ready to start assembling we just need to cut the qu inch bottoms of these drawers they are I these channels are/ qu inch deep uh so to give a little wiggle room I'm basically giving an extra 3/8 so instead of 2/4 making a half doing 38 and I can slide it in and assemble everything a lot of them so let's start cutting that on the table saw we're here we're ready for these drawers sit back and enjoy this [Music] [Applause] I'm getting ready to start installing the drawer slides here's the thing like I said they're half an inch thick so we made the boxes a full inch uh smaller or narrower uh the thing is because the face frame there's this gap on the sides some of them mostly it's like 38 of an inch just when it's centered but some other parts is close to about a quarter like this transition here so for the quarter I'm just using a/ Quin strip that I'm gluing to the side of the thing and then the rails will attach to it and on the other side I'll use 38 now you could prevent this because uh you can buy these slides that actually extend out and there's little mounting brackets that go in the end so this would essentially just sit there and that would go all the way across and plug in I decid not to do it because it's a 27 maybe 25 in Long vanity so there's both ways to do it so you can just think ahead all right for installing the drawers I'm going with these Euro slides um I didn't go with the ball bearing fancy stuff mostly because I wanted to find ways to save a little bit of money like I think one of these is like 20 bucks and one of these that I bought it's like seven so saving a lot of money uh uh we got the slides that go underneath the drawers and then these are the receivers on the sides going to set them up Mount them and then get all these suckers installed hey you're probably noticing my new t-shirt Mr build it Peace and Freedom it's a support for the victims in Ukraine last month we sent over about 1,500 bucks in t-shirt sales 100% of the pro are going straight to the people who need it over there IR is Ukrainian we want to send as many uh things that we can do to help the people out there snag yourselves a Mr B merch help support the people they need the link will be in the description below go check it out now let's throw these drawers in hey real quick this is me in the future of this video uh you see me installing these slides they suck I decided to throw them all away unfortunately after I already installed them all reason why is because our draw frames are recessed inside the gaps have to be perfect and with these well there's too much of wiggle room and sometimes it kept catching on it so you almost have to adjust it I hated it so I decided to throw these out and buy these drawer slice the ball bearing ones yes they're more expensive but it allows it for us to have perfect control as the drawer is closed yes I took a $100 loss but at least I'm extremely happy with it now let's get back into where we left in the past let's go let's talk drawer fronts so this is Red Oak that we're going to go with it's 3/4 in thick I'm going to keep it simple but also fancy at the same time I'm going to cut it to size the perect Dimension leaving an eighth on each side and then I'm going to take a/2 in router bit that has a uh a triangle vgroup shape essentially and through you know using a square I'm going to try creating lines down the middle making it look like it's flued but give it that cool texture I guess so we'll start cutting this up and then Mark out the settings and then do a whole lot of routing got my marking set up every 3/4 of an inch got my bit set to 1/2 in deep going to start using a speed square clamp it down and just move right along [Music] [Applause] all right so I'm getting to the last three quarters of these These are the big drawers how's it going so far well it's it's going okay it's not exactly what I thought it would be um I love it it's textured the difficult part is somehow even though I'm marking them 3/4 apart some of them have wider uh or sorry wider uh tops and some of them have narrower tops but the spacing is on point so I don't know exactly why even though it's the same setting on the depth now what I'm going to do is after this all done I'm going to sand the stuff over so it's grooved out so it'll look like texture but it won't be exactly perfectly symmetrical if you're going to take calipers um again it's going to be textured there's going to be a lot of it so it's going to a lot of it's going to get lost in the detail which I think in us our case is good oh and also I called Woodcraft which they have a CNC that you can rent out and they'll create perfect flutes turns out it's like 150 bucks an hour and those cnc's go pretty slow with as many boards that we have here so we probably my best guess conservatively would be looking at an extra $300 to have them routed with a cnz and um this is more I guess DIY application please remain [Music] seated all 12 drawer fronts are cut and grooved let's start using our sander 80 grit and I'm going to try to curve these the stuff around I just actually noticed in the middle of carving all of these 12 drawer faces this this is like wood carving you know what I mean like it's not necessarily we routing it's it's shaping wood and uh you know I don't feel bad if it's not perfect perfect [Music] perfect you know what to do where do we go from here don't let it rule you all right so after hours of hand sanding this by hand uh two 220 grit finally everything is nice rounded over looking really really good I I'm I'm loving how this texture looks I want to encapsulate this with a frame around it nothing too thick just to give it more like a three-dimensional feel more cleaner feel so what I'm going to do is I'm going to take this uh Red Oak and I'm going to cut it into qu in strips and we're going to do a little picture frame with wood glue and Brad nails and then that will be all ready and then we'll start installing it got our pieces cut got our glue got our 18 gauge Brad nailor let's start assembling [Music] and there we have it the most elaborate drawer fronts I've ever made in my life almost like worth the arthritis I got in my hand from building these these look so cool I'm going to start busting out the rest of these [Music] enj the drawer faces are all put together now that's left is to fill in all these little brad nails sand everything done and also sand the vanity itself and then we'll stain it I'm going to use fruit wood I've done a little experiment it looked perfect the misses approves the most important part so of course and I don't know how you can prevent this from happening uh but of course the hole that's it completely in the center of this whole piece for the drawer pull is on the side part of the flute so I'm starting to kind of drill at an angle then straighten out and go straight down but um yeah [Music] fun all right getting ready to stain I'm so excited about applying this because this is end grain and it's continual and it's a pattern so it's going to pop more than what side grain would do I'm so excited let's do this [Music] so here's how we're going to install these puppies drawer faces a little pain in the butt especially when they are recessed like that I'm going to use shims you can use spacers anything you want and I'm going to put them in until everything is perfectly even completely around now that the gaps are appropriate I'm then going to take a screw and drive it right in the middle where the knob is going to go this will hold the face frame to the drawer temporarily now pop these off carefully pull our drawer out and secure them with 1-in screws on the inside then we're going to remove our set screw we're going to drill all the way through and ATT charch our Hardware this is the hardware this little beautiful little subtle brass that's going to go on there the detail is going to be so incredible let me finish this off and I cannot wait to show you this big reveal see you in a second all right let's talk about the budget for this giant Master vanity the cabinet carcass itself was $255 that's including the face frames the drawer boxes were $156 the flued style drawer fronts were $112 material and that is because we had to Mill the wood ourselves we had to use a thickness planer and the Joiner to accomplish that the drawer slides were $188 the beautiful gold knobs were $43 the legs for the vanity was $28 and the stain was $8 making this grand total to be $790 guys I am so excited how this thing turned out probably my most proudest moment of making something like this it came out beautifully now there's a couple of things I wanted to address in case you're wondering number one this is a vanity this is just quartz countertop we will have top mount vessel style sink so that's where there's no holes cut out yet number two in order to have the water drainage I made some of these drawers where the sinks will go to be narrow that way it doesn't interfere with the PE trap and all the water coming down and on top of it you can pop the drawers off and still access the plumbing adequately and number three the back is completely exposed so we can push this against the wall and we have the access to go towards the drain so in case you're wondering that's how it works hey thanks so much for stick and watching yet another one of my videos it means the world to me and if you're brand on the channel and you like videos like social media all the links will be description below as well as the merch section and the patreon where we have extended hourong footage the stuff that didn't make it to these videos so you can learn more information about it and in case you're wondering where this vanity is going you'll just have to come back next week to see the project that we're tackling next that's going to involve this beautiful vanity tune out this week we'll see you guys on the next one see you bye there's a lot of sentiment that goes to the bottom which is leftover color that's you know you're missing out on I don't I got rid of my freaking drill press I wish I had it but I used it like once a year so [Music]
