What happens here
This project outlines the process of diagnosing an existing car's exhaust sound issues and planning the fabrication of a custom equal-length header system. It covers selecting a suitable base header, measuring and planning modifications to achieve equal primary tube lengths, and ensuring proper fitment around engine and chassis components, with the ultimate goal of producing a specific "race car" exhaust note.

(19,836 characters)today we're going to be doing some exhaust work last video we had all kinds of boom tubes sitting on the floor we went over and we talked about how they worked and what they should sound like and had you guys vote on which one you wanted to see tested on the monte carlo first and to no surprise you all picked number four which was this one right here this is from a 2001 morgan mcclare super speedway car you know the famous kodak car the one everybody knows from sterling marlin back in was at 94.95 when he came out of daytona and all the others i got things sounds like an indycar it sounds turbocharged all that stuff this is why this is a real one came off one of those cars we're gonna figure out how to connect it to the 6.2 liter ls engine in ralph here it's got an lsa supercharger on it this is actually the original engine from the escalade i think it's about 10.25 to 1 compression if i recall correctly it's got a brian thule positive displacement stage 3 cam in it which does not have a lot of overlap unlike a naturally aspirated stock car engine would this cam doesn't have a whole lot of popcorn at idle so it won't make the right sounds at idle you know under load with boost the dynamic compression goes up it could make similar sounds it's that the only reason why it may not is the headers the headers are not these are not equal length primaries they're not tri-wide collectors they're not even merge collectors they're just the regular old run-of-the-mill speed engineering ls swap headers with the regular stamped collector and a little spike in the in the middle you can tell that you know the primary up here is a heck of a lot longer than that one that's going to jumble up the sound waves are not going to converge at the same way that a true equal length or close to equal length try y header would but we're going to connect this exhaust to it anyway and see what it does if it doesn't make the right noises we will change the headers around see how that works out the exhaust on here right now is just the the out of the box dr gas boom tube system and not a huge fan of the way it sounds it sounds too much you know just like an ls car it doesn't really have that howl and i suspect it because one the mismatch of length in the headers you can see how much farther back this collector is than that one so the distance from the merge point of the exhaust pulses to the x itself is different on both sides so it's it's not gonna you know it's not zippering the sound waves as efficiently as supposed to and also i have a theory that they're on our part not putting this together is that the boom tube itself is too long and there's not enough pipe after the x to gather the sound before it gets spread out into the boom tube that's just a theory i don't know but we will know after we do these tests that's the whole point is to to speculate and learn find out what actually is it's basically like science class for car guys so let's get to it rip this one off and see if we can get that thing on there oh got it off you can see how much different it looks it's a lot longer it's based on the exit where it is you can see how different the collector locations are on there and how far they are from the x for the x to do its best job it needs to be really close to the collector so when you have the on the speedway try y headers then at the primary collector you know back here and then the secondary tubes and then the merge so the whole collector was really long unit be enough to get on the transmission or on the crossmember with the regular squish four to one you don't have that extra distance involved i really have no idea where this is going to line up on this car we're gonna have to put some pipes in in here to extend it because the way this is now it would run into the transmission oh we'll obviously have to work around that we'll have more room under there i think whenever we get this car swapped over to a 56 magnum which we have all the stuff for it the whole american power drain swap kit it may end up poking out in the middle of the door which is fine just for sound purposes we're not gonna cut mod or any of this because this thing is like a relic if it got messed up might be really sad so we'll probably only drive around enough just to hear what it sounds like and then take it back off because i don't want to screw it up there's still rubber and stuff stuck to it so it's really cool how's it going pretty good if my measurements are correct we need a straight piece of three and a half uh 12 inches on one side and about 15 on the other side okay i don't know if we have any long sticks of three and a half do we we might i i moved all the pipes to the back so we'll have to look we got the pieces on there we'll say this thing does not fit on this car very well it is way too wide for the body but it'll at least work well enough to make sounds and do some sound testing we'll have to find some way to temporarily hold it up so we can drive around and like you know get some sounds other than sitting on jack stands idling but i can't wait i need to hear what it sounds like right now so we're gonna fire this thing up real quick just for a few seconds because we're still inside and logan's gonna film with her phone so we have an alternate source of sound just for comparisons because you know phone video to gopro sounds different sometimes you know the photographer stands for your like sumo squat looks like you're taking a dump yeah what [Music] no no we need new headers it still sounds the same is it just is it just me or does it still sound the same that sounded a little bit better is a little bit better it does sound better more violent it yeah it's like verbally sounding yeah i think yeah the the way that the sound bounces through the three and a half inch pipe i think just gives it a little bit more rattle i don't know i'm not i'm not i just have to say i spent so much time cleaning up so much and mitchell's boxes are blown out everywhere again oh yes they're all my boxes yeah they are your boxes yours yours yours yours yours well we get packages and we bring them inside and then they end up staying right by the door you want more extra nonsense like that you can check out the stapleton 42x4 channel that's where you'll find that right now don't know what to do are you okay did you just funny bone yourself on ralph's butt yeah i think i caught that on camera too no i think we need to go to one of the uh youth parts places like circle track warehouse or sri or something and find some headers from an arca car and see if they'll let us return them if they don't fit or like i just want to test fit them to see how much they don't fit because they can be modified to fit if they're close like you know cut one primary tweak it a little bit you can do that but these i'm convinced that these headers are just not going to make the right sound no matter what you strap to it i just don't think it's going to work right the engine that i used to drive to classes with is connected to an exhaust that very possibly ran in the 2001 daytona 500 on a morgan mcclure kodak card yeah how weird is that i don't know but it was really cool that like you know when i cleaned those how dusty they were yeah did you see the dust blow out when you hit it no it was cool it'll be in the video yeah i hope so we'll get to see that okay i want to watch that phone video hear how that audio came out my ears hurt that was loud i didn't know you were gonna do that i was right at that exit when you did that i was pissed because i was like i thought you were getting in to turn it off and you weren't turning it off i don't know when i turned it on it still sounded exactly like it did before i'm like maybe it'll sound a little different if i just blip it like just to be able to tell if it's going to be any different did some digging around and actually found a set of headers from an arca car this video is brought to you by policy genius policy genius is your one stop shop to find and buy the insurance you need did you know one of the like arca east west whatever they use these headers and they have what looked to be close to equal length primaries and they got try y collectors which are vastly different from the ones that are in there now we're going to see if we can get these to fit found some other ones too they were of a hooker variant but the um this primary in here went to the bottom hole and it kind of did a like behind all these and occupied a lot of space in here which if you're familiar with these engines in the factory starter location that's right where the starter is so i was afraid it might hit the starter i didn't want to try those yet because the starter on stock cars is bolted to the bell housing on the bell housing side where the factory engines have them bolted on the block side i can tell you right off the bat i do believe they're going to clear over here and over here against the steering shaft you will not find anybody else who is committed to making cool noises as we are as for damn sure just plop that header out and we'll see how it compares oh once i gotta get down to the o2 sensor kind of forgot about that if this does work i did buy uh more sensor bunks to weld into these headers there you go here's the old one out of the car they'll say it looks a lot okay it doesn't stick down that much farther that's impressive uh they're a lot they're a lot closer than i thought they would be it's like a whole six inches longer these ones pretty dang close other side actually the side i thought was gonna be the worst one is close but the passenger side not gonna work it uh it hits the starter and it hits the where the arm mounts on the bottom and if it didn't hit that then this primary would hit the frame crossmember right there they're too uh direct they need to go down that way more but we're committed to this now i already got these headers out i think what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna measure them up find out how far off the short ones are from the long ones get them mocked back up in there and see if i can cut them apart and make new primaries for the short sides to kind of like do something with them to give them more distance more curves to try to match the longer ones as opposed to building new headers from scratch and then add the try y collectors to the end try to get them as close as possible i just can't just can't put those ones back in i just can't do it i don't like it it doesn't fit with me i'm not going to be happy with this thing until it makes the right sounds don't get me on a senate because i don't know could end up making a whole set of headers for this thing from scratch i don't know we will see how far i am willing to take this but my feet are dug into the ground and they are not moving this car is gonna sound good or i'm gonna die on this hill trying it is now several days later i have been doing tireless research on header length information how they measured them what they used what matters what doesn't matter all that stuff i've come up with a lot a lot of really interesting stuff and we're gonna this video is getting way out of hand but we are gonna chop up those headers let's start with the harder side first which is the driver's side so we're just gonna shove it into the bandsaw and cut this off see how that goes here we go no turning back now cool got this one took this one off completely and limp with that so here we go honestly probably could have just uh probably could have just started from scratch but you know who cares we're already here we're doing it and now we can use all these as uh you know we can cut them up and use it which is great but this one is significantly shorter than that one so i'm going to add the appropriate amount of length to this because it's got to be as long as the longest one over there our longest one has to be the longest one so i'll make it too long and then we can narrow it cut them down uh after the fact but it's gonna have to be longer so we'll go with that here and i kind of mark this here because the way the steering shaft goes like it's got a lot of room so if i cut it here i know i could kick it this way and still have room if i cut it here i can still do that and we can always trim it back further but we're gonna start with here and see what happens i guess i really have no idea what i'm doing but it's the moral of the story you just gotta start doing it and i got all these measured out this is the speed engineering headers you see there's the length of one seven's way down there i look like i'm freaking mad scientist over here this is the other side two and eight that's a pretty big gap these are the kesalowski dodge headers you got look at this you got one three five seven all right there and then this side's a little bit worse you got two four six eight but still that spread is you know less than half of what the spreads you got going on over here and the the eight spec engine headers were not as tight as the dodge ones the cup headers but they were still a lot better than what we have but i also theorize that by moving the longest primary to the closest collector hole you take out distance and you can also add distance to the ones that are closer by making them go farther to the bottom you go around other pipes so that's what we're doing well this video really got away from me had every intention of actually taking the car like mounting that exhaust taking the car out and getting some sound clips but as soon as i turned it on i just knew it was gonna irritate me it wasn't gonna be right enough for me to even justify doing the work to temporarily hang it up there so i thought oh well let's just modify these headers we'll modify those headers it's gonna turn into i'm just cutting them completely apart and using its own pieces to rebuild itself in the correct fashion because what i got in there is so hard to work on this when this joint up here is welded to the flange that it's just easier for me to freaking cut it off grind it out and start over but we're gonna have i'm changing everything that the number one primary used to go to the bottom outside collector hole and i'm having it go to the top inside one because that's the closest one to this i had no intention of doing that when we started this but you know what if we're gonna do it we're gonna do it right and they're gonna be double stepped they're gonna go from one and seven eighths to two inch to two and a quarter just like these dodge headers are and they're only stepping up two and a quarter because i already had tri-wide collectors laying around that were that size so if i stuff them again i can use them and don't have to buy other ones which is exactly what we're gonna do we're gonna use these ones right here the other two are still under the car but they're going to get bolted to this like that and you can change the length of these by these intermediate pipes here give you a sneak peek of what's going on here this does exactly what we need exactly because with these on here the collector's right there and then you got the secondary collector it's gonna put the x-pipe right after the crossmember right in the perfect place for the car i was told that this the secondary collector is supposed to be the same length as the primary ones in a perfect world so we can move this around as we need to and i'm referencing it off of the header the existing header already just to give me something to hold this collector that way everything that we will go to bolt onto this will have this cylinder spread which is about the same for like every boom tube we have except for the ones that came off of the trucks i think they're a little bit wider but most of them are all the same so what we end up with as a finished header is going to be something we can slide any boom tube configuration into and test anything it'll be the perfect platform to test from and it's going to sound way different problem is it's going to take me a long time to do that so it's not going to be in this video but if you're new here make sure you're subscribed so you can see that i'm doing a whole do a whole walk through on it can explain what we're doing we stopped by mike ferris shop dog fabrication he makes those awesome welding cups and never met the guy before he was super helpful just unloaded tons of knowledge and turns out he used to build headers as his main job for nascar teams indycar he said he even went to europe and did f1 stuff like the dude is a header wizard and he told me everything that i was trying to figure out by asking people who didn't know the answer like some of the cup headers have spreads of up to five inches between the longest and shortest primary and he said if they're not fighting for that then don't beat yourself up over an inch but still get it as close as you can pretty much are you even following this like are you are you vibing with me right now or am i crazy for cutting up a set of hiders on a perfectly running car it's not going to make any more power than it did before but it's going to sound completely different is it worth it to you are you fascinated if it's not worth it to you i'm not offended you're just not like me but if you are fascinated by that does matter to you and it is worth it welcome to the team buckle up it's going to be a fun one and if you're still here i've got a little secret surprise in for you you ready with these tri-y headers after the fact we can take the secondary collectors and flip-flop two of them bank to bank to pseudo-mimic 180 degree headers so that's that'll be an experiment after the the primary one it just it's gonna be really cool it's gonna be cool a lot of work but it's gonna be cool and if you like to make cool noises too you can check out stapletonautoworks.com get yourself one of the boom tube shirts that has that morgan mcclure system on it or this one too that has the monte carlo on there with arrow wheels and a boom tube staples in autobooks.com check it out we got stickers too hats flex fit you know that stuff yeah he's watching me waiting for me to leave also we're doing live streams now if you missed the last one i'm sorry if you want to re-watch the last one you can go be a channel member and watch the old live streams on the feed there but we'll be doing a live stream again we're gonna try to make that a once a week thing so why don't you leave a comment and tell us when you would most like us to go live that you can participate so we can kind of figure out when we should do it
