What happens here
After all welding passes are completed, allow the welded assembly to cool slowly to room temperature. This helps to prevent stress cracks and improve the overall strength of the joint. Once cooled, inspect the weld for any defects such as porosity, undercut, or incomplete fusion. If the welding process produced slag (common with stick welding), use a chipping hammer to remove it, followed by a wire brush for cleaning. For a cleaner, smoother finish, a grinder can be used to smooth out the weld beads, as seen in the final appearance of the components in the video.
Goal: Ensure the weld is strong, visually acceptable, and free of defects
Tools and materials
- Angle Grinder — Smoothing down the weld beads for aesthetics or fitment
- Chipping Hammer — Removing slag from stick welds
- Hearing Protection — Protecting ears from grinder noise
- Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes during cleaning and grinding
- Wire Brush — Cleaning the weld area
