This is Chris, the Idaho Painter. In this video, we're going to give you some tips and tricks on how to actually make a wood sign like this with a simple tool like a router. I got my friend Eric. He's got a really cool YouTube channel. It's called Old Dave 100, and he teaches you on his channel how to make wood signs. Gives you a lot of tips and tricks on them. But right here on my channel, he's going to show us how he actually went about routing this. It's very complicated and not easy to do. And then the painting wasn't easy to do either. So, we're going to give you some tips and tricks on how to paint this thing and clear coat it for outdoor use. And the painting portion of it will be on his channel, Old Dave 100. You got to go check it out and subscribe to his channel when you're done watching this video. But here we go. Show us how to route this thing, Eric. Uh, and this is the sign. So, he wanted to uh somehow integrate the YouTube logo and the subscribe button. So, I did. So, I kind of put his logo on there. Now, if you guys have been watching for a while, then you know that the way I uh get my sometimes get my designs on the board is I have a vinyl printer. So, I printed this out on vinyl and stuck it down and then I covered it with packing tape. That helps keep the the vinyl stuck down. Uh and it helps u kind of reduce the burring as I'm routing through the the uh the actual vinyl. Um, and it also helps the router base slide on there real well. So, um, stick with me cuz this one is going to be really a challenge. Some of this, uh, some of this detail in here. Uh, but we'll come right back and get into the carving. Okay, guys. So, here is the bit that I'm going to use. This one, uh, sometimes I would use my profile bit, but this isn't my profile bit. This is the SC50. comes down to a really fine point. It's a nice little bit for doing really really intricate uh intricate stuff. So, uh I'm going to get into it here. Uh get my my cheaters on. As you guys can see, I was just cutting the red. That's what I'm going to really uh concentrate on on this logo. The first thing I want to do is I want to cut out all of the red lines. All of this, all of this. So, um, here I was at one depth. Now, being as this is a bigger, a fatter red line, I'm going down deeper. Um, and I'm just setting my router bit a little bit deeper. Here we go. So, what I've done here is I've cut away all of my detailed red lines. I'll come back um on on a future scene and I'll cut this stuff away. But what I'm going to do now is I'm going to do the same thing I did here. I'm going to cut around these letters and I'm going to cut away all of this red. That's my next step. So, here we go. [Music] Okay, folks. I think you can kind of get an idea of what I'm doing here. So, I'm going to go ahead and finish up these letters. Cut this uh outside line. Cut that outside line there. do that off camera, but you guys can see um kind of what I'm doing. And then I'll come back and take out the stuff that's left in between. Hey guys, you know what? I almost forgot the the U here. So, I've got to cut this inset. These are outset. For those of you that don't know, these letters are outset where they'll have a background around them. But, I'm going to cut these inset. And um figured we'd come back on camera and do that on camera. Here we go. Um, I've done all the detail work with that other bit that was the SC50. Now I've put the profile bit in. This one still cuts detail but doesn't quite cut quite as narrow as that other one. So I'm going to go in here and I'm going to make a second pass and you guys will see what I'm talking about here in a second. Let me set my depth here. So, what I need to do in essence is I need to go around a lot of the places and make my line uh a little bit bigger. What I call a buffer zone. And you guys have heard me say that before that have watched me. So, I'm going to go in here and I'm going to take this stuff out of this the U here and then cut a wider line uh around all these letters. Here we go. So, what I've done here is just gone around and when I go back in with my 90° V-groove, my what I call my cleanup bit, it gives me a little bit more room to take that stuff out and not be so close to those letters. Nick those letters here. I don't need to use it at all because that's all gone. So, I'm going to do the same process that I did here. I'm going to do it here and then up in these little pieces. So, um we'll then we'll do the cleanup soon as we come back. All right. So, here is my cleanup, my 90° V-groove cleanup. Now, normally I use this in my bigger router, but I have hardly any of my background to do, so I figured I just put it in my little DeWalt since that's my favorite router. So, let me set up here. I've already got my depth set. You can see right here, this is what it does. So, I've taken out this piece here and this piece over here. So, I'm just going to take out the rest of this and this and we'll show that right now. Okay. So you guys can see what I'm doing there. I'll go ahead and finish the rest of this up off camera and we'll move on to the next step. Have all of the carving done. Uh so now what we have to do is we have to go back and if you look down in the some of these cracks here, you can see that we've got packs of sawdust in there. So what I have to do is go in and make sure that all of that sawdust gets taken out. I've done videos on this uh in the past where I've talked about using a stiff bristle brush and brushing down in there in those crevices because we're going to spray our color down in there. You're actually going to spray that red. So, see how that that brush didn't want to get all that out. So, I'm going to kind of help it by using my little hand carving tool and cleaning out those grooves. So, see even down in here, you guys probably couldn't see before. I'm Can you get down in there? See that little piece right there? If I don't take that out now, then that's going to come out later and it'll end up being a white spot. So, you have to be really meticulous. All of these things that could come out, you got to take the time and get them out of there now so that when you get your color down in there, they don't come out afterwards. So, I'm going to go ahead and I kind of I think you've kind of seen what I what I need to do here. I'm going to take a few minutes off camera, clean all of my grooves out, make sure all of this stuff, See all of that stuff there? I don't want any of that stuff to come out after my spraying is done. All right, you guys. We are just about ready to spray this thing. But before we do that, we got to put a edge on it. So, I'm just going to put a bevel. I've rounded the corners. Kind of a standard thing that I do. And I've got my 45° bevel chamfer bit in there. So, I'm just going to put an edge on it. Here we go. [Music] Okay. So, I'm going to put a slight a slight chamfer on the back, but I'll do that off camera and we'll be right back. I want to explain something to you first. What we what my original plan was to do the red and then the the blue and the white and um and the white and the black here is blend them on a flat surface and be able to blend the paint uh edge to edge and bring the paint right up to uh the edge. Well, after about a day of practicing, I came to the realization with my lovely assistant that painting ain't my strength. And you guys have been watching for a while understand that. So, we came up with a different plan. So, here's what we're going to do. What we're going to attempt to do is we've got the board. So, this is got the the finish on it. And so what I am going to do is we actually the last time you saw this just a minute ago, none of these lines were here. And we had uh we're going to attempt to paint this whole thing and bring the white right uh on the edge of the blue. But what I'm going to do now, what I'm going to attempt to do is I'm going to actually carve out all of this is all going to be inset. And then I'm going to spray it blue. I'm going to carve this all in set where those lines inside those lines. Spray that white. Sand it off and uh and see how it comes out. That is that is the plan for now. So hopefully we can pull this off. I got to say that this is maybe the most challenging sign I've done in um a long time. Uh, so now that you guys kind of know the plan and what we're going to do, um, I'm going to get the router set up and we'll be right back. All right, folks. We are back. So, what we're going to do is I'm going to be using the SC50. I showed that earlier in the video. I'm going to be using the really tiny SC50 to do this uh this small work. So, let's get after it. Okay, we're back. So, now what I'm going to do is I've taken the SC50 bit, the really tiny one. I've taken that out and I put in my profile bit. Now, I have to give myself a little bit more room to take uh this stuff out so I don't nick the edge of the outside of the letter when I go in to do the the background. So, here we go. Oh, okay. So, you can see there's not much left in there. Uh, I'll just take the rest of that out with my cleanup bit when I get to it. So, I'm going to go ahead and do the rest of this Idaho off camera. give myself again a little bit of a breathing room or a buffer zone around there so that when I go in with my background bit, I won't hit the edge of those. So, we'll be right back and we'll have that all done. All right, so we got all of the little painter letters done. Now, I'm just going to take out the the leftover stuff in here with my 90° V-groove. So, um I'll show you how I'm going to go about doing that. I'll just finish this up. Take the rest of this out. Then I think we're actually ready to clean that stuff up and start masking off and spraying our blue and our white. So, there you have it.
