What happens here

This project provides a detailed, step-by-step guide on how to unbox and install a hardwired IYILO Level 2 Electric Vehicle (EV) charger. The process covers understanding the charger's specifications, planning the electrical route, running the necessary wiring, making secure connections at both the charger unit and the electrical panel, and finally powering up the unit for use.

What's going on guys? It's Handy the Sparky here, electrician from New Jersey, and today I'm going to be showing you guys the Ilio EV charger installation. Here it is guys, and this is a hardwired level two EV charger. This is the exact model in the box. I'm going to show you guys the unboxing. I'm going to show you guys a full installation and my honest opinion on this charger. And I'm an electrician. So right now I'm going to unbox it. And right off the bat guys, it has a good presentation. Right now we're at a customer's home. We're installing an EV charger for her new hybrid Mercedes-Benz. It's got 50 mi range, and she wanted an EV charger. And just to clarify, this is a 48 amp hardwired Ilio level two charger. And this is Energy Star approved. This is Wi-Fi enabled, and it has an app. So this is technically a smart charger. Honestly, looks nice. Here is the charger right here. This is the Ilio charger. And I see it comes with a whip. So you can see you have your two hot conductors right here, your black, your red, and your green. So you got your two hots and your ground here. Cuz this is a level two 240-V charger. So when you install this charger, you must have a double pole circuit breaker. You must have a double pole circuit breaker, which I have right here. So this customer has a 100-A electrical panel. So we are installing a 40-A circuit breaker with this charger due to load calculation, load demands. And this charger you can install up to a 60-A circuit breaker. But in this case, we're installing a 40-A because you're able to derate it. You can install a 60-A breaker, you can install a 50-A breaker, you can install a 40-A circuit breaker. Uh and even as low as to a 20-A double pole circuit breaker. Nice thing about it is that, you know, cuz sometimes you can't do that full 60-A. It's a 25-ft long cord. And overall, looks really nice. So, we're going to get to the install. We're using 8/2 Romex wire because 8/2 8-gauge is rated for 40 amps. This charger is going to be putting out a 32 continuous amps as we're putting in a 40-amp circuit breaker. All right, guys. So, let's get to it. All right. So, here's the plan of attack, everybody. So, here is the customer's Mercedes right here. And the charging port is located right here. So, hey buddy. We are installing the charger right here. This is where she wants it. And it's a nice piece of wood actually to support this charger. And uh the electrical panel if you go over here There's my work van. If you go over here, here is the electrical panel. So, we're going to have to get a wire somehow from here to over to that bay over there. That's where the charger is going. So, yeah. So, I think most likely what we're going to do is we're going to get our 40-amp circuit breaker in here and we're going to run our Romex and follow this Romex path. See, yeah. It's going It's peaking up over there and then we're going to the other bay cuz you always want to follow where the wires are going. That's rule of thumb as an electrician. And then we go over here. Yeah. So, that's the plan, guys. We're going to come with our wire from over there and then down to the charger right there. All right, ready? All right. So, we got our wire ran. Here's our 8/2 Romex wire. Next thing you want to do, guys. So, here is the charger right here, right? I have here the whip attached. You want to take this Allen key that is supplied with the charger and you're going to want to mount the wall plate. So, we're going to take out the screws. The screws are on the sides. Oh my gosh, this Always use a level, guys, when mounting, too, because you want to make sure it's straight. Now, we're going to put the charger on it. So, goes on like that. >> [sighs] >> Guys, so here's the progress on the Elio charger. And look, so we have our whip installed. And here is our junction box. You can see we have three wire nuts. One is for the ground, one is for the one hot, and the other one is for the second hot leg. So, L1, L2, and ground. So, you can see I got my Romex ran up here. It's going that way, and it's going to the panel over there. My brother, Ken, who's also an electrician, he just He just terminated in the electrical panel, 40-amp breaker. All right, guys, I'm just going to close this up. And guys, we should be on our way to calibrate this soon. All right, guys, so we got the charger installed, about to flip the breaker on. Guys, so here is the breaker panel. You can see our 8-2 Romex wires being fed right here, going down in the top knockout. We ran the wire across over here, going across to the next bay, to the charger, which is over on the other side of this wall. And here's how we ran our circuit breaker. We have a 40-amp double-pole circuit breaker right here, our two hot legs. And then our ground is being connected to the ground bar. And this is a subpanel, so we have to separate the grounds and the neutrals. So, you can see the neutrals are on the bottom, the white, and then the grounds are over here. So, guys, about to turn the breaker on, and here we go. Live. And boom, I heard a beep. So, there she is. That nice clean install, man. See that? Wires being ran over there. We have our flex right here. Boom. Fresh. Let's get it, man. You see the lightning bolt as it turns green, that's when you know you got power. And then Wi-Fi is blue. Boom, guys. And look, they even have a pay feature if you want to pay, maybe. Oof.
