(11,300 characters)Don't you guys hate ugly TV power cords hanging below your TV with the wire just like this only because you have an outlet below your TV? I'm going to show you guys how to install an outlet directly behind your TV. So, watch this video. What's up, guys? It's Henny the Sparky here, electrician from New Jersey, and today I'm on a service call. customer called saying that they have a TV in their guest room and they want an outlet installed behind their TV because they were tired of seeing this ugly cord going down their TV because this was the closest outlet. So, I'm going to show you guys how to install an outlet directly behind a TV. I'm going to show you guys step by step how to do it. So, first thing you want to do is turn off the power for this outlet. And in order to turn off the power, you must go to the panel box and turn off the power. And you need to flip the circuit breaker. And if you don't know how to flip a circuit breaker, it is very simple. You just have to go to your panel and identify the circuit. I can show you guys that in another video. But basically, you want to get a non-cont voltage tester to make sure you got no power going to this outlet because you're gonna have to take this apart because you don't want to get zapped. Our plan of attack is everybody, we're going to cut a square with our old workbox right here. This is our old workbox. We're going to take off this outlet cover. Okay. All right, just like that. It's always nice, guys, when the wires are long. You know, it's easier to work with. When the wires are short in the box, it makes it harder to work with. But we're thankful that the wires are nice and long. You could see this is a 14 gauge wire. There is a 142 ROMX that is in the box. So, what I'm going to do, guys, I am going to actually actually just leave it just like this. I'm going to leave the outlet on the side like this. Okay. So, this is a data a data wire, guys. This is cat 5 cable it looks like. And the customer said that they're no longer using this data port. So, uh this Ethernet port actually. Uh, so we are going to remove this box right here. So I am able to actually get my wire um through this behind the wall. And then I'm going to sleeve the wire up into the wall over here up top where my TV is. So I'm going to take my box out just like this. So as you can see, this is a new workbox, everybody. And a new workbox means that the box is nailed onto the stud. If it's an old workbox, there would be wings just like this. So, this is an old workbox. And this is a new workbox. So, I can tell that these this is a new workbox because the stud is right here. I can see it. See it as I'm prying my screwdriver. This right here. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to take a sawzaw and I'm going to get these nails out. Here's a sawzaw. And this is this is a bit by Diablo. I'm going to use it's for nail embedded wood. So, here we go. Just like this. It's nice and long. You don't have to get this like this. This is super long. This is a 9 incher. But let's cut All right, guys. We got it. All right. So, I got the data wire out and I'm going to pull the box out. And I turned the box inside, guys. And that's how you get a box out. But, but as I was getting the box out, I did get a little bit the drywall, but it's not a problem because I got a jumbo plate. So, that should cover that up. And if you do mess up, guys, sometimes just get a bigger cover plate and you can fix it. So, we now have an open space here. And I feel nothing behind the wall over here. So now what I'm going to do is I'm going to fish my wire. And in order to fish my wire, everybody, I'm going to fish my wire from the outlet box to over here. And then I'm going to sleeve it up into the wall. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to take my ROMX right here. You don't need a lot of ROMX for this job, everybody. Here's about like 15 feet, which is plenty. This is from my truck. 142 ROMX. I'm going to take my flathead and I'm going to twist the bottom right here. Right there. Just like that. I'm actually going to use my uh dikes to cut that. Just like that. And I'm going to sle my ROMX in everybody. So, watch this. There's nothing in the wall here. There's no studs here cuz there's a stud right here and there's a stud right here. And studs are marked every 16 in. So just to give you guys an idea. So 16 in just like this. Just like that. See guys, we got our wire through. I'm going to pull enough wire so I can just have enough for the TV up there. So, we got our wire sleeve through. I'm just going to pull enough so I have enough wire going up to the TV. So, this should be plenty of wire right here to get to the TV. So, now I'm going to now make a cut. I'm going to pull the TV out. Just like that. A little more. So, now I'm going to make my cut for the TV outlet. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to take my fish snake. So, I'm going to take my fishnake as a measurement and I'm going to make sure I'm going to be aligned with the box below cuz we're going to go directly above the box. So, here is good. So, that should be about where this outlet's going to go. Then, we're going to take our old workbox, which is right here, and we're going to cut a square. Okay. We're going to trace around the old workbox with a pencil. Just like that. I like to use a keyhole saw. And before I use a keyhole saw, I'm going to use my hard hat because you got to be safe out here. Make sure before you cut with a keyhole saw or anything, you want to make sure you're not hitting a stud. So, right now, you hear that sound? It's like hollow. So, that means there's no stud. So, I'm good to cut. Let's go. You want to be careful when you cut, guys. You don't want to make sure you hit any wires. Just like that. I'm going to feed my fish pole down. Here is a fish pole, everybody. I'm going to feed it down to the outlet. Just like this. All right, I found my fish pole. Just like that, everybody. And I'm now going to tape my ROMX wire to the fish pole. So, I got it taped. I'm gonna pull up just like this. All right, we got the wire. The wire is fed. [sighs and gasps] I'm going to take the tape off. And boom, everybody. We got our wire. Now for the outlet up here. All right, guys. So, we got our box in. You can see our box is right here for the TV. Our wire was ran through here, as you can see. And guys, we're almost done here. And anytime you have an old workbox, you want to make sure you tighten or secure it with the wings. So, just like this, you could take your drill and I'm going to just secure it. Let's see. Just like that, guys. This box ain't going nowhere. Boom. All right. And now to cover this up, I am going to I'm going to take one of these guys. This is like a data box, everybody. I'm just going to throw this in right here. All right. I'm just going to tuck the wire in right here, everybody, just in case if the customer wants to use his data in the future. I'm going to put the original blank plate on. Here we go. Just like this. So, I'll just get a little bit of spackle here. It's not really that big of a deal. Um, minor minor repair, nothing crazy. And then I'm gonna actually then now take this ROMX wire and I'm going to connect it to this outlet right here with with their terminals. So, black's going to go to the golds and white's going to go to the silver. And um the grounds are going to be wire nut together. And guys, yep, that's how we do it. So, what I'm actually going to do is I'm going to cut it right here. Yeah, right here. I'm then going to take a WGO connector just like this. So, I get my grounds connected. I'm going to take a WGO one. Two. Put the ground here. So, we have our grounds connected. Just like that. And then we're going to connect it back to our our outlet. Just like this. This is 14 gauge. So, I'm going to use the 14. Just like this. Just like that. I'm going to do my shepherd hook. shepherd hook two. And you guys, when you put these wires on, you want to make sure that your shepherd hook is going where the screw terminal is turning. So, I'm going to show you. So, here I have my neutral wire, the white wire. So, I'm going to put the shephard hook this way because the screw is going to turn that way clockwise. I don't want to put it, you know, this way because when the screw turns, it's going to un tighten. It's going to loosen the wire. So, make sure to always go into the direction where the screw is turning. So, right now, I'm going to put my white neutral wire like this. Boom. So, neutral is on. I'm going to tighten. Now, I'm going to go to my hot wire. So the shepherd hook's going to be this way because the screw tightens that way. So now just want to show you guys the recap. So we got our our hot wire, our new ROMX wire um is can now connected to the outlet and our new neutral wire is connected to the outlet and our grounds. And we pigtailed our grounds together into this WGO connector. Want to make sure it's tight. And now I'm going to tuck all these wires back into the box first. There you go. back in. Just like that. All righty. So, we now got our outlet back together right there. We have now the data box back together. It looks like nothing happened, everybody. And then now, as you can see, we have our wire secure. Our new old workbox installed. And look at that, everybody. Looks like nothing happened. So, we are about to now strip the jacket of this ROMX and install our outlet. So, stay tuned. All right. So, we have our outlet all wired up. Just want to show you guys, you know, to double check. So, the black wire goes to the gold terminal. All right. The white wire goes to the silver terminal and the copper wire goes to the green terminal. And I only have one ROMX, everybody. And this ROMX, just to clarify, is going to that outlet over there. So, I'm getting power from that outlet below, and it's going to this outlet up here. And the wire is being fished through the wall as I was able to get my wire um through this blank plate over here. Before it was a data box not being used. I put a jumbo plate. And there we go, guys. Just like that. And we sleeved our wire through the wall. We're almost done here, guys. Now, time to put the plate cover on. That's all she wrote, guys. Bang. All right. So, here's our new outlet for the TV. It's right here. We came from the power below. And guys, clean and smooth job. Just like nothing happened. We're gonna plug in this customer's TV, his power cord now to this TV outlet behind his TV, and we're gonna show you what it looks like. And just like that, everybody, bang. Let's turn the power on. All right, here's the finished product, everybody. So, look, TV power is on. We have it plugged in to our new outlet over here. And you can't even see it, everybody. I'm going to turn on the power. Just like that. Boom. Let me know what you think of this service call. Is a residential service call. These calls are very common for electricians. Uh comment how much would you charge for this job. And guys, uh that is my service call of the day. I'm about to celebrate. The customer is super chill. He actually gave me a beer, everybody, to celebrate. So, I'm about to chug one for y'all. Just like that. All right, guys. Hendy the Sparky. See you in the next one. [music]
