How to Build a Retaining Wall
What happens here
To ensure the successful construction of a durable retaining wall, always remember three critical elements: first, thoroughly compact the raw subgrade soil beneath the base layer. Second, correctly place and lightly compact the base material, ensuring the first course of blocks is individually leveled and then collectively leveled with the rest of the row, creating a flat top that will last for years. Third, install an adequate drainage zone behind the wall, using 3/4 inch free-draining angular stone, extending a minimum of 12 inches, or even 18 to 24 inches, to prevent hydrostatic pressure. Following these steps in the correct order will result in a retaining wall that stands strong for decades.
Goal: Reinforce understanding of the key steps for a successful and long-lasting retaining wall.
