How to Build a Retaining Wall

What happens here

Laying the first course of retaining wall blocks is the most critical step for the wall's longevity. Each block must be leveled individually, both front-to-back and side-to-side, using a level and a deadblow hammer to gently tap it into place on the base material. Once individual blocks are level, ensure that the level slides smoothly across adjacent blocks with no ridges or hesitations, indicating a consistent height across the entire course. For a standard installation, aim for a perfectly level bubble. Some experienced installers may introduce a slight backward 'batter' (pitch into the hill) by having the bubble slightly off-center towards the back, but this technique requires expertise to avoid over-pitching, which can cause the bottom of the wall to blow out.

Goal: Achieve a perfectly level and consistent first course of retaining wall blocks.

Tools and materials

  • Deadblow Hammer — Gently adjusting blocks into level position
  • Level — Checking horizontal and vertical alignment of blocks
  • Retaining Wall Blocks — Constructing the wall itself
  • String Line — Guiding the alignment of the block course
