How to Build a Retaining Wall
What happens here
After compacting the subgrade, lay a 6-inch layer of 3/4 inch clean angular rock (such as granite or limestone) as the base material. Spread the rock evenly and give it a light compaction with the plate compactor. This material serves two crucial purposes: providing a stable, well-draining foundation for the first course of blocks and forming part of the wall's drainage zone. Avoid using 'pea rock' because its rounded edges prevent the material from locking together, compromising stability. Angular stone interlocks, creating a much stronger and more reliable base.
Goal: Create a stable and permeable base layer for the wall and initiate the drainage system.
Tools and materials
- Plate Compactor Dynapac — Lightly compacting the base stone
- Shovel — Spreading the angular rock
- 3/4 inch clean Angular Rock — Creating the stable and free-draining base layer
