How to Build a Retaining Wall
What happens here
An effective drainage zone behind the retaining wall is paramount for its long-term stability. The minimum recommended depth for this zone is 12 inches, but extending it to 18 or even 24 inches wide is highly beneficial. Fill this zone with the same 3/4 inch clean angular rock used for the base. This material allows water to freely pass through and away from the wall structure, preventing hydrostatic pressure from building up behind the wall, which is a common cause of wall failure and blowout.
Goal: Prevent hydrostatic pressure behind the wall to ensure its structural integrity.
Tools and materials
- Shovel — Placing and spreading the drainage aggregate
- 3/4 inch clean Angular Rock — Creating the free-draining backfill behind the wall
