How Canadians Build Dump trailers
What happens here
Southland Trailers does not use powder coating on their trailers; instead, they apply PPG (Pittsburgh Paint and Glass) direct-to-metal paint. This choice is deliberate because PPG paint allows for easy touch-ups with a rattle can if the trailer gets scratched or dented, maintaining its appearance and protecting against rust. Powder coating, while durable, is difficult to repair locally. This paint process is audited for quality, from pre-paint preparation to wet and dry application, and comes with a one-year warranty. The paint choice reflects a practical approach to maintenance and longevity in real-world use.
Goal: Understand the benefits of PPG direct-to-metal paint over powder coating for durability and repair.
