Hardwood, quickly! #flooring #hardwood #learn #infomax

What happens here

Hardwood flooring is fastened to the subfloor using either L-cleats or staples, driven by a specialized flooring nailer. Cleats are generally recommended because they allow for more natural floor movement (expansion and contraction) and are less likely to split the tongue of the board, resulting in a more stable installation. However, cleats are typically more expensive than staples. Staples, while more affordable, can sometimes cause 'tongue issues' (damage to the tongue) and are less forgiving of floor movement. For hardwood boards wider than 4 inches, cleats are strongly advised to ensure durability and prevent issues.

Goal: Choose the appropriate fasteners for hardwood installation and understand their pros and cons.

Tools and materials

  • Flooring Nailer DeWalt — Driving L-cleats or staples into hardwood flooring
  • L-Cleats — Securing hardwood planks to the subfloor
