If you use leveling clips for your tile, do not use a quarter-inch by quarter-inch trowel. The height of these spacers leave an eighth-inch gap. When thinset gets applied and your tile gets set, even when you push down, you get minimal transfer. If you use a quarter by 3/8 or a half by half, when this gets set down and you push, you'll get better coverage, but let's step it up one more. Push down. Good ridge collapse. And we get even better coverage. Even though a half-inch by half-inch seems a lot bigger, it only adds a 16th to a quarter more thinset than the quarter by quarter-inch trowel.
