Edging and Joint Sand Application

What happens here
Once all pavers are laid, install a rigid paver edging around the perimeter of the patio where it meets grass or loose soil. This edging helps to lock the pavers in place and prevent them from shifting. Secure the edging with plastic spikes driven into the ground. After the edging is secured, spread polymeric sand (or a similar joint sand) over the entire patio surface. Use a stiff broom to sweep the sand into all the paver joints, ensuring they are completely filled. Run a plate compactor (with a protective mat on its base to avoid scratching pavers) over the patio surface to vibrate the sand deeper into the joints and further settle the pavers. Sweep in more sand if needed. Finally, lightly mist the patio surface with a garden hose on a fine spray setting to activate the polymers in the sand, causing it to harden and lock the pavers together.
Goal: Secure the patio edges and fill paver joints with polymeric sand for stability and weed prevention.
Tools and materials
- Garden Hose with Fine Spray Nozzle — Lightly misting polymeric sand to activate it
- Leaf Blower — Blowing off excess sand from the paver surface before wetting
- Paver Edging — Securing the perimeter of the paver patio
- Plastic Spikes — Anchoring the paver edging to the ground
- Plate Compactor — Compacting the patio surface and vibrating sand into joints
- Protective Mat — Preventing scratches on pavers during compaction
- Stiff Broom — Sweeping polymeric sand into paver joints
- Polymeric Sand — Filling paver joints to lock them in place and inhibit weeds
