What happens here

After excavation, prepare the base for the patio. First, lay down a layer of geotextile fabric across the entire excavated area. This fabric helps prevent weeds from growing through the pavers and stabilizes the base. Next, spread a 4-6 inch layer of crushed gravel (also known as base rock or aggregate) evenly over the fabric. Use a plate compactor to thoroughly compact the gravel layer in multiple passes until it is firm and stable. This provides a solid, well-draining foundation. Finally, spread a 1-inch layer of bedding sand over the compacted gravel. Use screed boards and pipes to level the sand accurately, creating a perfectly flat and even surface for the pavers. Do not compact this sand layer, as it needs to allow for minor adjustments when laying pavers.

Goal: Install and compact the gravel base and level the sand bedding layer for the patio.

Tools and materials

  • Level — Checking the slope and evenness of the base layers
  • Measuring Tape — Verifying base layer depths
  • Plate Compactor — Compacting the gravel base
  • Rake — Spreading gravel and sand evenly
  • Screed Boards — Leveling the bedding sand layer
  • Screed Pipes — Guiding the screed board to ensure uniform sand depth
  • Shovel — Moving and distributing gravel and sand
  • Wheelbarrow — Transporting gravel and sand
  • Bedding Sand — Providing a level and adjustable layer for paver placement
  • Crushed Gravel — Creating a stable and well-draining base for the patio
  • Geotextile Fabric — Weed barrier and base stabilization
