What happens here

Line the excavated trench with heavy-duty geotextile fabric, ensuring there is enough fabric to extend vertically behind the entire height of the wall, with extra to fold over the top. This fabric acts as a barrier, preventing native soil from mixing with the drainage gravel and maintaining the gravel's effectiveness. Next, lay down a substantial layer of crushed gravel or road base (typically 3/4 inch clean stone) as the foundation for the first course of stones. Spread the gravel evenly across the bottom of the trench, ensuring it is level and at the correct height for the wall's base.

Goal: Create a stable, well-draining base for the retaining wall.

Tools and materials

  • Rake — Spreading and leveling the gravel base
  • Spirit Level — Checking the level of the gravel base
  • String Line — Guiding the leveling of the gravel base
  • Crushed Gravel — Providing a stable base material and drainage
  • Geotextile Fabric — Separating native soil from drainage gravel
