Continue Stacking and Backfilling

What happens here
Continue stacking additional courses of irregular stones, ensuring that each subsequent course is placed to overlap the seams of the stones below it, similar to brickwork, to ensure structural integrity and reduce points of weakness. As the wall rises, periodically backfill the area behind the wall with layers of drainage gravel (the same type used for the base). Ensure the geotextile fabric is continuously extended vertically behind the wall, effectively separating the gravel backfill from the native soil. After each 6-12 inch layer of gravel backfill, use the vibratory plate compactor to thoroughly compact the gravel. This compaction creates a dense, solid mass that supports the wall and allows for efficient water drainage, preventing hydrostatic pressure buildup.
Goal: Construct the main body of the retaining wall and establish a robust drainage system.
Tools and materials
- Crushed Gravel — Providing drainage backfill behind the wall
- Geotextile Fabric — Separating native soil from drainage gravel
- Large Irregular Stones — Building the main structure of the retaining wall
- Shovel/Rake — Spreading and leveling backfill
- Spirit Level — Checking stone placement and wall batter
- Vibratory Plate Compactor — Compacting the gravel backfill layers
