Don't Ignore This! Fixing a Leaking Water Heater Pressure Valve
What happens here
To begin the repair, the gas supply to the water heater must be turned off by rotating the yellow valve on the gas line. Then, the water supply to the water heater needs to be shut off by turning the cold water shut-off valve, typically located above the water heater on the cold water inlet pipe. A garden hose is then attached to the drain valve at the bottom of the water heater, and the other end of the hose is directed to a floor drain. The drain valve is opened to allow some water to drain from the tank, reducing pressure and weight for valve replacement.
Goal: Safely prepare the water heater for maintenance by cutting utilities and reducing water level.
