What happens here

This project details the process of transforming a basic wall in a master bedroom into a modern media console and entertainment center. It involves building a custom recessed wall structure to house a TV and an electric fireplace, finishing it with shiplap siding, adding LED backlighting, and integrating electrical connections for a sleek, contemporary look.

hey what's going on guys welcome back to another episode on this concrete slab house renault today we're going to tackle this part of our master bedroom this is the tv this is a dresser it's a big wall and we want to spice it up so what we're going to do is we're going to take this basic setup and turn into that without wasting any more time let me show how i did it and let's get into this video let's go [Music] so here's what i'm thinking i want to create like a recess section for this tv while also installing one of those wall mounted fireplaces electric ones here's a general blueprint we have our wall uh the cathedral ceiling the tv is right there this is where i want to put the fireplace one of those skinny long ones i am going to create a wall that kind of sticks out this is going to be framing the framing is going to be two by eight so it will be that basically a thickness that will be coming out let me show you the supplies that i bought these are 12 foot long two by eights that's going to be the side profile that's the man is going to stick out we are going to install them at an edge into the existing studs how we're going to do that we're using a pocket hole jig put it in place create these pocket holes now in order for it to have a good strong connection what we're going to have to do is find where the studs are right now strip the drywall and then secure it in place using these pocket holes so as i'm standing here i'm thinking this is going to be a lot of drywall to remove especially if i'm going to hit all these studs so i did a little test piece of what a pocket screw will do and how much it'll come out and by the time we get through our half inch drywall which will get compressed because of this getting sucked in we're gonna have plenty of screws still left out so to make our live easier i think we're gonna scratch the idea of cutting the drywall out we're gonna secure it right into place we'll push it in it'll be strong [Music] all four boards have all their pocket holes that are necessary we're gonna use two and a half inch pocket hole screws start installing those suckers we need to remove this base board uh if you want to make a nice clean cut a trick just to use a scrap piece that has a nice 90 degree angle place it flush there and then use this as a guide to run your blade against and it'll make a nice clean straight cut [Music] but first let's talk about sponsor of today's video ariat i've been a fan of ariats workwear for a very long time way before they were sponsored today's video that's why i regularly wear their workwear in the shop or in the house whenever we're building speaking of my favorites the work pants are the areas m5 rebar these are fr flame resistant edition they are made out of 74 cotton 24 nylon and 2 spandex that's the favorite part of mine because they are tough they're three times more abrasive resistance and it allows for you to have plenty of flex when you're getting down and up on the ground and they're just great and of course you saw my dirty work boots because i actually put them through the ringer guys these are the ariats endeavor six inch waterproof boot they are waterproof yes especially right now these cold season we've got snow on the ground they're also slip resistant and they got a carbon tail on them they're not heavy they're nice and light they have the max energy rebound insole to put a little pep in your step when you're doing all these projects a huge thank you to aries for sponsoring all of my builds and be sure to check out the link in description some of my favorite items and using my promo code link description you'll be able to get 10 off your first order now let's get back to this build let's go uprights are on now we're going to do the separation for the tv and then the beginning uh box that will hold the fireplace insert i have it right here pulled up in the schematics it's going to be delivered on amazon i'll go cut my two by eights put pocket holes secured in place and then start reinforcing all these other studs to make sure nothing wobbles but it's all one solid piece [Music] one of the last pieces of studying we need to do is put the studs right here and up there if you have a tape measure and you see numbers that are a different color like 16 is red and then 32 is red and so on and so forth this is a framing technique that they use to find where every stud can line up 16 on center so all this does in your wall are 16 ounce center and with this tape measure you'll be able to find quickly as well i'll make my reference marks and put them 16 on center [Music] second thing we need to do is reroute the well the connection for the cable for the tv so it's hidden inside the wall so the kit is basically just another junction box that you can basically put in so what i'm going to do is take the tv off and install the box there run my cable inside there and just piggyback off of it which has most outlets have two slots you can plug in and jump them around safely hey real quick uh you see me using all these little tools uh i actually have a link on my website or click the link in description you'll see all my affiliate links on amazon it'll just automatically go to your shopping cart and you can check them out that way you don't have to go to the store and be like what did he use make your life easier [Music] [Applause] [Music] and boom we have an extra plug that's resisting the wall just like that all right so i'm going to start hanging some drywall i want to do as big of a piece on top as i can and a little trick that i learned is by installing a screw that's kind of sticking out a little bit you can climb up there set it on there and start securing the drywall screws from the top without having it fall down trust me been there done that don't want to be there again when it comes to cutting drywall make your line use your utility knife and what you're going to do is you're going to scorch the top once you get a client all the way across this is the fun part bring it over to the edge snap it down and then cut all the way through cutting that brown paper from the back and there we have it a clean perfect cut [Music] this must have been the biggest head scratcher i've ever had to cut out drywall all weird angles nothing straight here so we'll see what this thing looks like i highly doubt on the first try it's gonna work i might have to do some adjustments it actually was the right measurements this is ridiculous all right let's get those tools out and secure this piece [Music] finally starting to look like something drywall is all done i'm not going to do the inside because there's no point for it we are going to do shiplap surprise surprise ever wonder what 400 bucks of shiplap looks like well now you do i i didn't realize how expensive though i've done shiplab before who am i kidding yes i did i'm just lining myself so i'm laying out the pieces just before i start tacking them in and here's the issue that i'm having i'm having a leftover here of about two and a half inches and i'm thinking well what about if i put it down the middle you can do that the only problem is wherever i put it there's gonna be one strip here or two strips on the sides both are an eyesore i feel like when in doubt go down the middle [Music] okay uh mistake what surprise right you got to think like a few steps ahead so i'm thinking about this line right here and that is going to be one solid piece by me having this here the next piece will go full and then i'm gonna have a small piece again i i can't let that happen it's gonna look horrible so i'm gonna take this one off i'm gonna move it over here and then just move my way out this way then i'll trim this section off typically when you install shiplap you only put the brad nails on the inside tongue part that way you don't have to sand it or anything like that it's just a perfect finish because we found ourselves in this dilemma where we had to split these two down the middle in order to make everything symmetrical and transition out uh we are now having to or have the ability to just brad nailed the tongues and as opposed to before i had to do the faces and i tried to keep it minimally that way i have to patch minimally the glue will do just enough work but just so you guys know that if you measure everything out perfectly you won't have to split anything down in the middle but you know learn from my mistakes i guess [Music] up next i'm going to remove this tv and do the back wall i was going to save like 150 bucks by not doing it but i know when i'm going to get destroyed people going like oh you should have been what's next the next thing is we need to start wrapping these corners i went to the hardware store and i found this it's like a one by one already prefab corners rounded over so what i'll do is i'll start wrapping the corners on the outsides and then with these i'm gonna have to do a little bit of miter so it looks like a fixed picture frame so to do these miters with these 90 degree corners it's not as easy as you think just because there's two different planes at first i thought i would have to lay it on its side like this and create a 45 degree cut and it just doesn't line up again i'm not a finished carpenter i'm just learning things as i go so after a lot of kind of guessing and trying to figure things out i've realized that you have to create a 45 degree cut when this thing is on its rib essentially the way it would sit inside the casing you make two opposite images and then it will hug it together being tight both on the inside and the outside of the miters miters came out so perfect i did have to take some time i think all in all just four pieces here took me roughly around call it maybe 30 45 minutes probably 45 minutes but you know we got it we figured out and i'm very proud of it all that's left right now is we're going to put a quarter inch round over here and a quarter inch round over there to help the transitions and then we'll wrap this puppy with our baseboard and we're ready for filling up all these holes that we just machine gun on there so you guys the whole time i'm probably thinking well how are you going to plug in your fireplace well it's right below here already marked it out i'm going to use my ryobi hp series drill here with a nice big hole cutting bit on there there we go right over the electrical box i i don't think my hand's going to fit in there it's going to be a pain in the butt let's make it wider oh that's perfect folks that's perfect easy peasy for wood filler i'm using this minwax stuff it's nice and durable it's not as flaky as some of the other stuff a little trick do not put too much scrape most of it off that way uh when it comes to sanding you're not sanding off all this primer that's already been placed on it give it a quick light one let it dry and then sand it to either light 120 or heavy on 220 it's up to you i go light so i'm going to share a trick with you guys that i uh well i didn't realize till recently and uh it's a silly thing but i hope i'm not the only one so every time you have a sander and you're saying something we all hate it right and uh you always want the most grip the fastest and the most powerful standard you can get so you can get to the job faster and over with well then when you're sanding like mdf like this and you're sanding a lot of this wood filler if you have too low of a grit of sandpaper then it takes forever to stand it off if you have it too high like 120. it's very quickly you can take off a lot of the primers already there on the mdf so then i go wait why would a sander have speed controls you wanted the fastest but then i realized if you lower the speed lower the oscillations you don't have to be very quick about your sanding to not take off the primer you can just pace it with that oscillation speed it's the silliest thing in the world but i just recently learned it so enjoy it because we sanded it the dust fell you can't talk right now because it doesn't get trapped i always take a damp rag and go along every edge and surface collecting any of that fine dust that'll keep us from having a nice clean finished surface and then we're gonna caulk it [Music] make sure you have a damp rag it'll make it a lot smoother to get a cleaner seam [Music] all right folks start painting uh the wall paint is simply white from benjamin moore i've used this big container usually i'm a fan of the small one because there's less runoffs or anything but i've used the big one on the last ship lab for the dining room dinette buffet thing i'm gonna start mixing diluting it and we'll start putting a couple coats out [Music] so i keep it real with you guys i don't try to sugarcoat anything if i make mistakes i want to be authentic and show that everybody makes mistakes so i have some runoff right here the paint it's really hard to gauge it when the wall paint is white and you don't have the best lighting up in the ceiling so to kind of gauge where you know how much you're putting down it happens no big deal i'm going to let it sit and cure overnight tomorrow i'll give it a light sand and then shoot it with a fine finish sprayer from wagner these are led lights i promise this is a kit from amazon i'll link them description my plan is not going to be to put it on the ship lap because i don't want to see it by any means instead i'm going to do is i'm going to put it on the back side of the tv that way back glows on the back of the wall so the fireplace this is the fireplace i found on amazon it was it's an electric fireplace i paid 280 for it i'm gonna plug this puppy in right away is ready to okay oh wow you talk that's cool there we go now that it's all flush there's uh two screw heads or holes on each side that you secured right into the studs we got these acrylic stones that come with it [Applause] i wonder if they're supposed to be like a decorative thing what do you guys think let me know in the comments section below stones are dumb or put not back in lock them in place power stay on the floor that's already warm that's that's actually kind of nice the heater is a nice touch i don't know why you would want to do purple and all that stuff but okay okay so i can't play any music for you guys because youtube will probably take it out for copyright strikes the bluetooth audio sounds like a cheap small speaker no base it's fine if you listen to podcasts but i don't think i'd listen to music unless it's like a subtle jingle all right let me show you the big reveal how this whole thing looks let's go [Music] so let's talk about the price breakdown for this build the lumber frame was two hundred dollars the drywall was thirty dollars shiplap was a lot it was four hundred fifty dollars electrical was fifty dollars fireplace that we bought on amazon was two hundred eighty the led lights were 18 the paint was 20 all in all making this project done for 1048. hey thanks for sticking around watching yet another one of my videos it means the world to me guys if you bring a channel and you like videos like this or any other kind of home improvement project make sure to hit the subscribe button or tap the notification bell that will know exactly when these videos come out and if you're curious like these beams that we just did here in the last video make sure you go check it out we had a lot of fun well actually a lot of hard work but we saved a bunch of money and it looks awesome connect with me on my social media all the links will be in description below as well as the merch section and my patreon account where we put hour-long exclusive videos out there where you see a lot of stuff that don't make it to these 18-minute videos a lot of content out there for you guys to get more information of how to do this and i slowed down a bit remember guys courage and sweat we're not training professionals we're just not afraid to try and fail tonight this week we'll see you guys on the next one see ya bye i don't know if it's just me but i typically like to do the small finish work last night just because i like the momentum of getting all the big pieces up i don't know if i'm the only one but it's the way i like to do things and it's been working out pretty well for me
