What happens here
This project details the fabrication of custom exhaust headers for a highly modified drag car, focusing on precision cutting, fitting, and welding stainless steel tubing. The process involves using a modified portable bandsaw for accurate pipe notching, meticulous test-fitting on the engine, and TIG welding the individual primary tubes into a collector. The goal is to create headers that not only maximize performance and ensure proper clearance but also achieve a visually appealing and serviceable design, ultimately preparing the car for a major event.

(10,068 characters)so the deal is this car is supposed to be at the TMS titanium booth the PRI which is only like three weeks away and there's a lot left to do so I'm not gonna have the headers may be helpful some other miscellaneous stuff and you know Shane's at work right now but I'm in here and I'm gonna help my man Bob you know when I can't find stuff I ask him where it is he knows everything you know give me pointers here and there it's it's been great so basically what the deal is here is this the same powertrain as the old Vega which you know had a little bit of a mishap on the road happen sometimes but it's gonna be coming back better than ever it is uh f3 procharger this thing is huge like I am six five my hands are pretty big like that's just that's really big okay let's find something for reference here how about this pen they'll leave this pen no it's it's really big okay if you don't get it then then you just you don't really understand this think of like sofyan small children but making headers for it and I just started the other day what I got going on here so far the door is gonna come to about about here and I pushed the collector in because he wants to have a little bullhorn deal coming out there so keep it nice and tight well still make sure that can reach all the spark plugs and I got this wrench taped in here so I don't accidentally make the primers so that that bolt sucks to get out whenever I do this stuff I'm always thinking about how easy is it going to be to service when it's done because that's the most important thing to me I think especially on a car like this where the valve covers are gonna be coming off all the time to check the rockers and you know stuff like that it's got to be like simple Jane build this pipe the other day get a pretty good job self-taught guy just like me just out here doing it um garage nothing nothing fancy here besides this machinery which is pretty cool I wish I had this stuff in my garage cuz like he's in here making stuff you you can do so much with that but what I've been using that I think is pretty neat this little band saw here the cup the header tube that he made this little table for and it's operated by which is like a pout whatever it's normally done by a trigger that's just zip tied down and then he got this pedal which is for a meat grinder I think he said just teased into the regular cord for that saw and you know we can great and it cuts fantastic - like that's straight off the blade that is you've ever taught stainless before you know how hard it is to do and this thing does it really well I'm definitely gonna have to take notes on this setup cuz I really like the little pedal too so my first day here I actually had that primary finished but I didn't like it I didn't like the way it looked it kind of came down like this and then connected in there was this four mock-up sake yet it went basically like that but like I just didn't I wasn't feeling it because the way it was it just looked kind of weird having so much of a gap here it just it all needs to flow and visually that really matters to me Jane doesn't really care he was laughing at it but I I like it I like to make it look nice so what I'm gonna do here is I'm gonna turn this up probably cut it and then I'm gonna bring it back down into here it'll do kind of like it and then when you're looking at it it'll all kind of that one will flow up it's the next one come up and then that one it's just your eyes roll with it there's it'll minimize the dead space in here while looking at it from up here cuz it's up on a rack it'll just it'll look good just stay tuned you'll see we're gonna make this cool mocked up that front primary new way I wanted it much better than I did before I'll throw in a picture here of the first version of this that I did the other day where the that kind of goes straight they looked okay but when I stood back and look at it it just didn't give me that warm and fuzzy feeling so I had to redo it this fuzzy feeling that is why I like doing this stuff because when there's so much opportunity to make something cool here that I want to make sure it's fully taken advantage of and yeah it might be easier to connect these in a different way but when I step back and look at it when it's right I feel it and I like that feeling so that's why I do it like this now just got to kind of tack it all up test fit it again make sure it's good then move on to the other side where I could do it all again this is only the second time I've ever made headers the first set headers I made were the ones on the Escalade but I think the hardest part about it is just figuring out what you want it to look like like as far as the routing of the primaries and which tube and the collector they're gonna go to and what you know the path they're gonna take and once that's figured out then going to duplicate it on the other side is you know it still takes time but it's a lot easier because you you have a game plan for what you want to do you don't have to figure it out as you go so I'm gonna tack this up up over there make it happen freaky show up Bob I know I look like an idiot pointing the camera in my face so we try to figure out now how many I'm gonna put the shifter right there I don't like my sister angle I don't either I know some guys like it angles I don't I just like it straight so I was gonna put put it up here with another like a drive shaft loop tied into this drive shaft tunnel and put it up here but you know that's what three inches or so gonna hurt nothing drivers position I mean I can reach it and do every I mean is it a pusher a pole its push but it's automatic automatic sure it does all the ships in for me except for manually you have to do it you have to set it I think I'm gonna put it right there seems gonna make a little peg and yeah what kind of pieces I'm gonna cut a piece of tubing notch it check it on there and then this probably right there for height that's pretty far up I think it'll be alright I'll be just fine yeah the column and all that it was all way up here and I riding like I was in a baja truck or something I don't know what they were thinking anyway a lot to do I probably won't be able to fit in this thing John Gentry got in my last car I don't maybe I would that that's right this one's got a lot more room I think but it's pretty narrow right here so hopefully you don't have wide hips is that how you notch the tube this thing you pulled off here and going to tack at all just light it back in make sure it still fits that's what I've been working for a little bit today making some progress on the passenger side header I got one more primary to go and so far it's uh it's mirroring the driver side pretty well there's no really rhyme reason to that I say there's no rhyme or reason to that not in the sense that I just do it and it turns out the same is that it's just kind of you know looking at one side looking at the other and like I said before once you have one side done your blueprint it's kind of already there like I try to make it's okay use piece here a piece that looks like that I'm have a little intermediate deal here and I'll have another Bend sends a home oh you know come over here kind of do the same thing first one main leg intermediate piece and the sender homer and as I make each one I just kind of stand here and look at it and I don't know about you they look pretty damn similar and if you say they don't you're wrong cuz they do chains at work right now but uh he's gonna be working on the brick pedal and some brake lines later well I'll be tacking these up and probably start finished blowing them later so I got this frontside done now I gotta figure it out somehow I gotta pull it off tack it all get all this stupid tape off here put it back on it's very warm up here I've been sitting here most of the day just finished welding these primaries up just got the driver side done came out pretty good I'm starting to really get the hang of this stainless stuff yeah they're all hot like this and then I'll bring it over here put it back together I get it this side there's nothing over here now this side I already did so stick it in there stick that in there and now I got a weld the tubes of the flange and put the little tabs on here these things I welded mine the whole way around but Shane wants to use these tabs just in case you know something gets screwed up or hits something or whatever you could pop the collector off and just change it then you don't have to redo the whole header so that's what I'm gonna do they're all done now looks like the cardboard works pretty well they don't touch the bars nice and close he's been staring at me all day it's getting a little weird so I thought about making this a longer video where I include the part where the cars at PRI in the TMS titanium booth but I decided not to I'll just put it out there as it is the filming was kind of sporadic I didn't even think to make a video out of it until the second day I had been working on it and when I was there it was kind of I don't know not in my element so I wasn't thinking like I normally do which it's partly why I was kind of flat and quiet or more so flat and choir than normal because I'm usually pretty flat when I talk but yeah edited it on my phone that's not gonna last either I'm about to get a MacBook so I can make make the whole video editing process easier because right now doing it on a PC with the iPhone videos is just a total pain but uh yeah if you like that be sure to subscribe leave a comment what you want to see whatever make sure you tell Shane that you want to see him in more videos because he wants to be more active in YouTube but yeah he's needs a little push so give him that push you can find me on instagram at Stapleton 42 it's a little underscore at the end because some other guy has the other one and Shane's at Shane macular you probably already follow him because he's big super store what up yep we'll see you later it's gonna get better I promise
