a whoooooole front facelift. Brand new paver driveway, paver walkway, front courtyard area.

What happens here

To contain the pavers and prevent lateral movement, install paver edge restraints around the entire perimeter of the planned driveway, walkway, and courtyard areas. These restraints, typically made of plastic, concrete, or metal, are secured firmly into the compacted sub-base using long spikes. Once the edge restraints are in place, evenly spread a 1-inch layer of clean, coarse bedding sand (such as concrete sand) over the compacted sub-base. Use screed rails (PVC pipes or metal conduit) and a straightedge to precisely level the sand, ensuring a consistent 1-inch thickness across the entire area. It is crucial to avoid compacting this bedding sand layer.

Goal: Prepare the surface for paver installation

Tools and materials

  • Bedding Sand — Providing a level and uniform layer for setting pavers, allowing for minor adjustments
  • Hammer/Mallet — Driving spikes to secure the paver edge restraints
  • Paver Edge Restraints — Creating a durable border to prevent paver shifting and maintain the hardscape's shape
  • Rakes — Distributing and roughly leveling the bedding sand before screeding
  • Screed Rails — Guiding a straightedge to achieve a perfectly level and consistent sand bed
  • Shovels — Spreading bedding sand evenly over the prepared sub-base
  • Spikes — Securing the paver edge restraints firmly into the sub-base
  • Straightedge — Dragging across screed rails to level the bedding sand
