Compaction and Joint Sand Application
At 0:39 in
a whoooooole front facelift. Brand new paver driveway, paver walkway, front courtyard area.
What happens here
After all the pavers and bluestone are laid, use a vibratory plate compactor to run over the entire surface. This process compacts the pavers into the bedding sand, creating a secure interlock and settling them uniformly. If working with bluestone or other natural stones, attach a protective mat to the compactor's plate to prevent chipping or scratching the stone surfaces. Once compaction is complete, spread polymeric sand (or fine joint sand) evenly over the entire paved area. Use a stiff-bristled broom to sweep the sand thoroughly into all the paver joints until they are completely filled. Finally, lightly mist the surface with water, carefully following the polymeric sand manufacturer's specific instructions, to activate the binding agent. This will harden the sand, locking the pavers firmly in place and helping to inhibit weed growth.
Goal: Stabilize and finish the paved surfaces
Tools and materials
- Garden Hose with Misting Nozzle — Lightly wetting the polymeric sand to activate its binding properties
- Leaf Blower — Removing excess joint sand from the paver surface before activation
- Protective Mat — Preventing chipping or scratching when compacting sensitive materials like bluestone or decorative pavers
- Stiff-bristled Broom — Sweeping joint sand into the paver gaps
- Vibratory Plate Compactor — Compacting the installed pavers and bluestone into the bedding sand layer
- Polymeric Sand — Filling and binding the joints between pavers, inhibiting weeds and insect activity
