Install and Compact Sub-base Material
At 0:24 in
a whoooooole front facelift. Brand new paver driveway, paver walkway, front courtyard area.
What happens here
Following the excavation, uniformly spread a layer of crushed stone (or similar suitable sub-base material) over the entire prepared subgrade for the driveway, walkway, and courtyard. The thickness of this layer is critical, typically ranging from 4 to 12 inches, with driveways requiring a thicker base due to heavier traffic. Use the mini skid steer or shovels to efficiently distribute the material. Compact the sub-base thoroughly in lifts (layers) of 2-4 inches using a vibratory plate compactor. Each lift must be compacted until it is firm, stable, and exhibits no discernible movement or soft spots.
Goal: Create a stable and well-drained foundation
Tools and materials
- Crushed Stone — Forming the structural and load-bearing base layer beneath the pavers
- Measuring Tape — Verifying the thickness of the compacted sub-base layers
- Mini Skid Steer Ditch Witch — Efficiently spreading large quantities of sub-base material over the project area
- Rakes — Distributing and roughly leveling the sub-base material
- Shovels — Spreading and leveling the sub-base material
- String Line and Stakes — Ensuring consistent depth of the sub-base material across the entire project
- Vibratory Plate Compactor — Compacting the sub-base material and later the pavers themselves to create a dense, stable surface
- Wheelbarrow — Transporting smaller amounts of sub-base material to specific areas
